The "real" oil thread on here is only about 600 pages long and would make "War and Peace" seem like a paperback. LOL. It would take you days and days to read and you'd be just about the same place you are now. I got no recommendation for you--only sympathy if you have to read that whole thread. Seriously I use Pens 5-20 Synthetic and have great success, but your going to get about a thousand different answers---good luck

Some threads just seem to gain a life of their own--LOL--before the days over you'll have about 50 different suggestions. LOL "Burla" seems to be the forum "oil" expert. If he sees the posts he'll have to chime in---

Having been an active BITOG participant since ~2003, I used to sweat it out over oil choice as well and I've used pretty much all of'em. Anymore it's Supertech full synthetic, Napa or Carquest when it's on sale, Amazon basics, Kirkland, etc...

For some of my vehicles I'll mail-order OEM oil filters depending on the filter. Others, I just buy aftermarket.

On my Ram, I do an oil change every 5-7K miles, even if the oil life monitor says I still have 30-40% life left.

I'm certainly no authority but my take on things after much reading is that brand is probably less important than regular oil changes. The Hemi's don't like dirty oil.

Oils with high moly content seem to be favored though.

You can make this as simple or complicated as you want to.

Mopar specifies service grade MS-6395 . If an oil meets MS-6395 then it's what the manufacturer recommends. Any further thought on the matter is entirely up to you and how much you want to get bent out of shape over it :)

This is what I use now, my local advance auto keeps it in stock. I used to run Redline and RP filter.

Last oil change I switched from Valvoline synthetic and Valvoline filter to Pennzoil Platinum and Royal Purple filter and added a bottle of MOS2 LiquiMoly. Honestly I'm going to switch to something different on my next change as far as oil. I think I have about 2200 miles on the PP and the valve train noise seems to be getting louder and louder. Not a "hemi tick", just the sewing machine clattering. I'm too cheap to buy the Amsoil or Redline. But I am going to stick with the Royal Purple filter, but will be switching from the MOS2 to Lubegard. I've literally read through hundreds of pages on here and Google regarding oil and still can't figure out what I want to try next. :D And I did use five quarts of 5w20 and two quarts of 5w30.

Is your 5.7 noisy ?
I have always ran QSUD in my cars but after hearing and reading about the Hemi motor I switched over to Redline for the max protection I could get to make me feel better.
I believe I am doing the most I can to keep from having a lifter problem down the road.

Maybe overkill, I will just keep using RL 5w30 and the RP filter and be happy as the motor is very quiet..

I have been running Mobil 1 or PUP in my other vehicles as of now.

Many great oils out there now and if your Hemi is quiet you could buy a name brand oil and roll it.
My 2 cents

I run Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5-20 with the fram ultra filter and my engine is very happy with it.

So thanks to the api specs, they have made oils pretty uniform, so no need to stress, there are less differences between oils then every before. We are currently in the gf-5 oil era, and soon to be in gf-6 oil era, and most people aren't looking forward to that as the direction oil formulations are taking serve modern di engines better then older applications like our hemi's.

The issue with the market place is to get an api donut, you must adapt the one size fits all standard, and clearly that is a grand bargain and may not serve hemi's well. If you find a good oil and the truck sounds good on it, you might want to stock up, because when gf-6 drops those oils will cease to exist.

Ram forum is pretty educated on oil, the poll of most used oils are Pennzoil synthetics number 1, m1, amsoil and redline top off top 4. Redline's usefulness comes if you have lifter tick, if not you might want to go with any of the other three, I like Pennzoil 5w30 myself, the most used oil for rams.

Read moly basics, this is where it gets a little complicated. gf-5 does not limit moly, so that is one element that you might look for. All of those 4 choices have moly, redline has the most, amsoil the second most, and pennzoil and m1 average moly. High moly oils also include shaeffers, qsud, rotella truck and gas, and others. You can look at pqia and search uoa's and voa's for moly levels, or just ask if you had an idea about an oil.

Having said all that, I'd look hard at Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30, named "PUP", If you are one of those must use what the dealer says, try 5w20 PUP. It likely have more detergents then most any other oil and no doubt on our uoa thread and every uoa thread this oil consistently produces the lowest wear numbers.

If your truck sounds good at warm idle on PUP, I'd buy a bunch of it. One of the best deals on a higher quality oil, I stocked up when it was on sale for 22 bucks a 5 qrt jug. Thanks to walmart and amazon battling it out, you still can get it for 23 bucks a 5 qrt jug amazon. Such a high quality oil for 23 bucks x 5 quarts.

Try it first, if the hemi sounds smooth, you can't go wrong. If you wanna try another synthetic like qsud, go for that too, all are good oils. But try it first before stocking up. Remember soon gf-6 will drop and nobody knows what it will look like, but every time we get an "upgrade" they take protection out of the oil. gf-6 will be "resource" conserving, if that sounds good to you far be it for me to question that. For me personally, I think that garbage sucks. I have to lower my zinc so someone 10,000 years from now can have zinc? I heard he was an ******* anyhow. Hemi's are prone to have issues with cams lifters and heavy wear, this is why oil is such a hot topic on ram forum. Use the good stuff and welcome aboard. Cliff notes of syn thread, as far as engine oil goes. Much other lubrication stuff to consider. Make another thread when time to service those items.

PYB has always worked best for me. After realizing QSUD has a very similar additive pack I gave it a shot and its the best synthetic ive tried.

Same here, I tried PUP and RP 10-48, then switched to Redline with 10-48, motor sounded the same. I read about QSUD and read about the BOSS filter and decided to give it a try, my engine runs super smooth and it’s available at my local advance auto parts.

Oh God! Now what to do?? The Redline talk is all about the Hemi tick. Does Quaker State also reduce or eliminate this? The tick is a result of metal-to-metal, right? It wasn't good in my '66 Fairlane or my '55 T-bird, so why shouldn't this tick issue trump (no, not that Trump!) all other considerations?

Burla, I see you suggested sticking with PUP or whatever you are using if you don't have hemi tick. What if you don't have that, but do have the occasional startup clatter that goes away in seconds (and isn't manifold bolts)? It's either piston slap or lifters just needing that oil pressure they don't have sometimes at first turn. Using PUP now, just not sure it's worth changing things up since it's buttery smooth after the occasional startup sound.
