Hi community!

I’m new to Ram world and just purchased a new 2019 Power Wagon, has about 5000 miles. It was used for auto shows and marketing by the dealer. The offer was too good to pass up.

Prior to this, I was a GM guy and had a 2014 2500 z71 which I had heavily modified for off roading. 4.56 gears, rear locker, winch, 3.5” lift, 35x12.5 ko2s, on board air compressor and so on. GM refuses to make a good 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton Off Road truck with a solid front axle and locker so came over to the Power Wagon Family.

I want to be more modest with this truck and maintain most of the factory stuff such as the rims and suspension but I would like to fit a bigger tire and be able to still mount a full sized spare under the rig. I plan to have a second full sized spare either in bed or on a swing but want to maintain the one under the rig.

Given I don’t want to change the suspension or impact the axle articulation, I want to use the stock 17x8 rims, I want a full size spare mounted under the rig, I do need the ability to fit snow chains, and I’d rather not trim unless very minor, what would be the tallest and widest tire I could fit?

I’ve been looking at 285/75r17 and they are pretty close to a 34x11.5. Could I get into the 315/70r17 range? Several tires in the 315 range can safely mount on 8” rims according to the manufactures.

Sorry for the text wall, any insight would be great!

Welcome to the Club!
. 35” x 12.5 is the most you can go with chains and spare. The spare will not be able to be fully inflated in most cases.
Post a picture.

Welcome. I ran 315 70 17s BFG ko2s on my last PW. Great tire. Wore to fast for me. Fit in the spare we’ll also. Think they measured 34.6 inches.

As for the size when I went back down to a 285 I saw a significant change in MPG. For the better.

I won’t go that big again. I did it for looks more than anything. Yes the wider tire looks awesome but wasn’t worth it for me. I run cooper at3 xlts now. 285 70 17s and couldn’t be happier.

tons of tire info on here also. I’m sure someone will post links.

I’m thinking about just running 285/75r17s or 305/70r17, basically a 34. Shouldn’t need to run a tuner with only an inch in diameter increase.

I'm running 285 75R17 Coopers at 34.06". Many 315 70R17 tires are 34.4", not 35". Basically, 3/10 of an inch larger in diameter of which is nothing. I am running a tuner due to my shift points were noticeably off on our mountain grades.

I live close to Utah which has an 80 MPH speed limit on the Interstate near Moab of which is strictly enforced. It gives a probable cause to stop if exceeded by even 1 MPH. Don't need to give them any reason to be pulled over due to my speedometer being off by some 3 MPH. Even transporting a can of beer into Utah from out of state is illegal and with a blatant disregard for the 80 MPH by doing 81 MPH it can give them a probable cause reason to pull me over. Having my Power Wagon ripped through and searched (with my agreement or by a search warrant) is a delay not welcomed by all.

I’m more concerned with the width of running 315/70s, they are 12.6” to 13” depending the tire. I also don’t want to void my warranty with a tuner.

IMO, I would go with a 285/75 or maybe a 295/70. You should be good to go with up to a 35x12.5 for chains and getting into factory spare location, but will certainly be very tight. And when I say 35x12.5, I am not meaning 315/70, as those are often a bit shorter and wider than a 35x12.5.

My EVIC say between 16.6 and 16.9 on my 25 mile commute every morning. That is with the stock tires and 87 octane. I know the EVIC is wrong but that’s a solid 14 MPG. Being that the stock tires have done everything I’ve asked them to do, which includes two farmer neighbors impressed with what it does pulling off road, it’s hard not to stick with stock size tires. But, the truck looks so much better with bigger tires especially once you get up to 37’s. I hate being practical!

35's seem to be the sensible choice, especially if the spare fits under the bed but those 37s do look nice. I'm sure I'll jump straight to 37s when it comes time to buy some tires!
