What I meant is that the ethanol in everyday gasoline absorbs water. The mixture will burn out just fine -assuming just small amounts of water of course. Water removal gasoline additives are basically the same thing and not necessary since the introduction of ethanol to fuel.

Assuming a 30 gallon tank, you’ll have 3 gallons of E in your tank. A 12 ounce dose or whatever you get from a bottle of Heet is insignificant. Of course the companies selling those additives don’t volunteer this information...
Well, at age 68, I'm still learning something new... LOL

Thanks for the info.

My concern is just how much water got in the tank when I went through the car wash? I'm hoping the flap that the gas hose pushes away before gas goes in, kept most of it out?

I haven't had any sputtering or anything amiss with engine while driving it 15 miles today.

If the cover was closed, I doubt any water got in the tank. It would require pretty much direct pressure straight down the full neck to get anything in. With the door closed and the neck recessed, I can’t see how my water would have even hit the inside of the filler neck, let alone actually made its way through to the tank.

The chances that any water got in is small.

There is a flap that the gas hose pushes away before gas goes in.

water is heavier then gas, it will fall to the bottom.

duh, water WILL fall to the bottom. To exactly where the fuel pump will suck it up from...

I did something stupid yesterday. I gassed up and left without putting the gas cap back on and closing the cover... then up the block, I pulled into the drive through wash and when I got through it I then noticed the gas cap off! DANG!!!:banghead::confused:

I drove it to another store and then to the auto store where they said all I had to do was put in "HEET" and that would take care of the problem? I put in one can.

So, what should I do? Is HEET enough or should I have my mechanic drain the full tank?

Back in the early 80s, I gassed up my Toyota and picked up alot of water in the fill up. I left town and went about 2 miles and the car started to buck and cut off. The tach dropped tp 0 but as the car continued to roll, the engine would re fire and run a little and the same thing would happen over and over again. I finally got to a store and bought 2 pint bottles of rubbing alcohol and poured them in my 16 gal tank. I started up and drove a couple of miles and the engine leveled off and ran great. I would not put any more alcohol through my engine than necessary. The water will not burn but the alcohol will mix with water and mix with gas. This is old school but works.

Today probably less of an issue Ethanol fuel is ethyl alcohol, the same type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, used as fuel.

Fuel pump does NOT pull from the top of the tank but from the bottom. You had probably already consumed what little water got in there by the time you posted this.

Thanks for all the posts, tips and advice. I learned a few things too which is always good. Like always making sure the gas cap is on after gassing up. LOL

Just so Y'all know "why" I forgot to put the gas cap back on... was after gassing the truck, I had two 5 gal gas cans to put gas in, so I went straight from truck to cans and by the time I got done, forgot to put cap back on truck... yes sir, I will never forget again. Last time I did that was years and years ago.

All that said, the truck never did sputter or act up in any way and I'm down to 3/4 tanks... so all is good...

I agree as when I gas up in Oregon where by law the attendants have to pump the gas, I have to tell them NOT to pump more in after the pump stops as that will trigger the engine light. Those idiot want to pump in as much gas as they can for profit.

I don’t think the fuel pump will pick up the last 2 gallons or so. That’s so you won’t pick up all that crap in the bottom of the tank. I’ve drained quite a few tanks with an auxiliary electric fuel pump and when it runs dry there’s still quite a bit of liquid in there.

Ed, love that dark blue truck of yours. We wanted dark blue but couldn't find one in NW with specs we wanted, settled for the maroon one.

my gas cap is attached with a cable-isnt yours-and was the fuel door closed-if so I wouldnt worry too much, especially if you put the Heet in. Buy a new cap, with a key,you wont f-up again!

Another old time method is to put some methyl hydrate in the tank, here in the north, we used to use that as gas line antifreeze.

That would be a dangerous assumption. The alcohol that is safe for us to drink is 'taken off" in the distillation process at a specific temperature, anything extracted at a lower temperature is likely to be poisonous (why some say that moonshine can blind you)

I think you had too much to drink this evening.

Can you explain please?
I gas up Fred Meyers as I shop there a lot and usually get 10 cents a gal off each time I gas up. I use the midgrade there. Sometimes I use Shell, (who supplies it to Fred Meyers) but it's usually at least .30 cents more a gal there.

Freddy's gas definitely has 10% ethanol (read: corn alcohol) in it. I believe both Washington and Oregon both mandate a minimum of E10 fuel anyway, so you have nothing to really worry about.
