On the sand, wider for sure, which is also why you air down on the beach.
On snow, narrower is better as you actually want to dig down to the road and not float on top.
The snow part I didn't know but just saw this on Motor Trend as they had a tire expert on.

If you look at tactical military vehicles they all have what would be considered skinny tires for the proportion of the vehicle.

I did not have the pleasure of going to the sand box. Ughh

But I drove jeeps, 3/4 tons and duece and halfs on all kinds of other terrain. Usually towing a trailer. Only got stuck once.

Skinny and tall for overall off road performance.

For real world usage in the vast majority of terrain, I'd buy a narrower tire. Better road manners with less crack and rut following, higher MPG, better acceleration/braking due to less weight, less risk of hydroplaning, better snow traction, and better appearance (subjective) are all reasons for my choice.

I prefer a slightly narrower tire as well. Been pretty pleased with the Ridge Grapplers on my 2500. 285/75-18. Way back in my younger years I ran those tall narrow Super Swamper mud tires like on that jeep on the previous page. They were phenomenal in the Florida mud. Before that we used to run those old style military tires, tall and skinny.

LOL, this says it all..

Position: A tall, narrow tire is a superior choice for all off-highway surface conditions with the exception of deep, soft sand or mud.

So wider tires are better for on highway and mud/sand, and my guess is snow and I'm sure he forgot rock climbing. So where exactly would be narrow tires better? 4x4'n in a dry hay field? Soft sand and mud describes most trails I've seen. I dont mind narrow tires, but I thought that statement was funny and not complete, they clearly weren't considering rock and snow.

Narrow tires better for snow. That’s why a lot of places will recommend a more narrow winter dedicated tire

I like to have the taller sidewalls, no matter how wide if I'm going to be out in the bush where there's lots of gulleys and rocks to hit. More sidewall = more cushion for me and my vehicle. Just one man's opinion. :mexsmoke:

I bit the bullet and balanced these duratracs. Gonna cross my fingers and see if they survive the summer. Maybe just maybe these kendas will be even less during 4th of July or something....im surely keeping my eyes on them. My old lady would MURDER me if I bought any more tires.

I have been scanning the threads and don't see many posting if they had to install a lift to accommodate taller tires. My 19 BH Classic came with 275 60 R20's and since I plan on ditching the SRA's as soon as possible I don't plan on a lift of any sort, but just want to fill up the wheel wells a bit more.
The 275 60's are 33" tall and I want to go 275 65 for a height of 34.1 at the least. I don't see any confirmation so far but would bet that if I stepped up to 35"s I will rub without a lift.
Can anyone confirm my thinking on this?

I’m running 34.1 x 10.98 on my 20x8 Oem chrome clads With no lift or level. No problems at all.

It’s been pretty great so far in my desert runs. Looking forward to some mountain time in a month or two. I will say this, a level won’t do me this time. 4 inches under the belly and a front bumper with a better approach angle are in the plans. Then it’s on to the 35.4x11.5s.

This is the least I will go but it may be the tallest that I can go without any issues.
Depending on your offset you can go 35". Nitto makes a 35x11.5x20 in a few models. 285 65s are another option equivalent to about a 35. It's the width of the tire that usually hits the UCAS on stock wheels or when guys run alot of negative offset with a wider wheel and tire combo that you run into issues.

Saw the new Toyo AT III is not only 3 peak snow rated but comes 35x11.5r17. Think these may go great on my 17x8 Rebel stock rims and give me the snow driving ability I’m wanting.

Maxxis Razr-AT has mountain symbol and comes in this size as well. I'm waiting to see more info on it as it was newly released

Toyo at3 comes in 35x11.5-17. C rated but it has the same sidewall plies as the E rated 35x12.5-17.

That’s what I’ve been looking at. I have had two sets of toyo at2s. The better winter ratings make the AT3 In 11.5 wide highly appealing.

I put a set on my jeep and it is a good size. I also have run several sets of AT2's in all different sizes and the AT3 has a better tread but is louder. Should be an awesome winter tire.
