My wife loves the look we went with on her 2019 Bighorn Sport. Red and Black.

However, she would like to black out her wheels. I can see the reasons why. Chrome wheels kind clash with her visual statement (her words not mine).

So, I know we can remove the chrome cladding (old school days known as hub caps!!!) but what about the underlying wheel itself? It looks like grey powder coat and shouldn't be much of an issue.

So, if anyone here has done it, can you post pics and give me your thoughts and any tips? Thank you!!

That chrome plastic cladding is not designed to be removed. It's not a cover or chrome overlay you can put on and remove. It's bonded to the rim and it's intended to be there for ever.

It would be much easier to buy new wheels and better tires (the Firestone's suck) and just take the clads off and sell them to somebody that likes shiny objects.

Ahh,

It came with Bridgestone Duelers. So, now I know and will probably just try using the plasti-dip over the chrome cladding.

I didn't do it on my new truck but I've done it on others with the chrome cladding. No issues.

Thank you.

Will try and do this in the next couple of weeks.

Did you do it on the truck, or did you pull the wheels off first?

I've done it with the wheels still mounted, just because it was easier. It always came out pretty decent but if I did it again I would probably pull them off and lay them flat.

Did driver side over the weekend. I think it really pulls the black trim and nerf bars together, plus while the wheels were off I masked the brake rotor and sprayed the calipers as well.

Looks great! How long did it take to do the two? Are the before pics the bare steel wheels with chrome caps removed?
