So we had to jump the '97 1500 I gave my son because it doesn't get driven much, maybe once every 2 weeks. It has a cheapo walmart battery.
Anyway it started right up then died a few seconds later. When we re-started it the idle was at about 1800 rpm and would not go down. We tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes with no change.
Took out the IAC and it was pretty dirty. The opening where it goes was also quite dirty. Sprayed IAC off with throttle body cleaner. Also sprayed entire throttle body including the hole where it goes.
Truck now starts and idles perfectly. :waytogo:
I'm thinking the IAC got stuck trying to keep the truck from stalling.

Very common issue. Pcv also plays a role in maintaining idle when coming to a stop

Had that same problem on my 97. Most people clean the Tb but not sure how many people fully disassemble them and clean the IAC and map sensor ports. I did a full cleaning on mine when we still had our 97 and it ran like a dream after. Had hesitation and a slight stumble on deceleration and cleaning it cleared that up.

Both IAC and throttle body must be clean to idle properly. I learned the hard way by not keeping them clean as my 97 5.9 would not idle properly until I cleaned them. Also learned from a Mopar mechanic with over 20 years experience that the ECM must see at least 11.5 volts or it will not idle properly. A weak battery can Be the problem as well. I hook up a trickle charger to my Mopar battery if I know I am not going to drive my truck for several days.
