i tried looking around for the issue but i cant explain it....

This issue doesnt happen all the time but randomly my rpm's will fluctuate and ill hear like a whining noise coming from the passenger side of the truck echoing off parked cars and walls as i drive. when i put the truck in park it will stop, if i put it in reverse it will stop. it only happens in drive. also if i accelerate fast i can almost hear like a gasp of air, i almost feel like i cant hear my turbo spooling when this is happening. another thing i noticed when this is going on if i get out of the truck i can hear like a loud tick coming from under the bed near the gas tank, and i can small something almost like burning brakes? its the weirdest issue and only randomly happens maybe once every few months other than that the truck drives fine and i have no issues 90% of the time. what could be causing this? the only thing i have noticed is my fuel filter life is below 20%.

regenerating?

That is exactly what I was thinking. I believe you are smelling and hearing the diesel particulate filter doing a periodic regeneration. I deleted my 2011 when it was almost new and all that exhaust is on a shelf out in my building.

regenerating?

Can you elaborate? I’m new to the diesel thing. I am loving it so far especially since I do a lot of hauling ( I work for a general contractor) and I do a lot of towing ( I own a toy hauler) I’m learning slowly what types of issues you deal with and I know the DEF system basically smothers these trucks, is the issue from the DEF system?

During an active a regeneration cycle, the exhaust DPF temperature is elevated over 1000°F to burn off the soot. During an active regen the boost pressure is lowered and fuel injection timing is altered so some unburnt fuel goes into the DPF to help facilitate burning off the soot.
DEF has nothing to do with this process. It is actually injected into the SCR which is downstream of the DOC/DPF.

Sorry to barge in this thread but I see ramcares is posting again....

Hey @RamCares I see you are posting again. Several of us have been left hanging and not had a response to our messages with Kaitlin in weeks?? We are left hanging on a draglink issue that she opened a case on. Are you taking over for her? Can we get some help please?

That is an excellent explanation.

so basically what you are saying this is normal? is it normal for it to regenerate this often? should i be having the soot build up as much as it does? or does something need to be serviced?

so after searching the term regeneration i found a lot about my issues and its not an issue at all, its normal. but for some weird reason i dont get an alert when my truck goes into regeneration mode, although it is very obvious because i can smell it. looks like my only issue is i do a lot of short commutes for work most of our jobs are pretty local and that seems to clog the DPF up quicker than long highway drives and getting it hot enough to burn the soot and keep the system clean.

You will not get a alert or message when it is doing a normal regen on a 2014, only the 2019+ trucks do that. You will get a notification of a "forced" regen though. They don't happen very often if at all. I've seen 2 of those in 70K miles.

For normal regens I have a separate app running on my phone or tablet where I can see those. They should happen about once every 800-900 miles or so?

Thats exactly what it is. Diesel is not the best for a commuter truck. Excessive idling is also an issue. The best "fix" is a long highway cruise, or a run through the hills.
