let me start off that i am WAAAY old enough to know better , but had a moment of weakness.

i was hypothetically doing donuts and burnouts last night on a back road away from the rest of the world until i wasnt...I will admit its been years since i hypothetically did anything like that, but it was a big smile/then frown moment

rear spider gears exploded. i am sure I am on top of the repair myself and the kit isnt a horrible price, so in the end it doesnt kill me

has anyone else had a similar experience or is there some weakness to the 9.5 rear that i wasnt aware ?

Which carrier was it? Open or limited slip? Either way if you had a point where you had no traction and then it grabbed it can blow the gears. That is a lot of stress all at once.

hypotheitcally both tires were in full spin...i accept that it wasnt smart and that is "what i get" , but just curious since some guys race and drive alot harder than i do normally if there was a weakness in the rear or just too much skinny pedal and gigglin for it

Were you getting any wheel hop or did the rear end break traction and “just spin easily”?

I know on these trucks it will let you spin the tires if you want but the electronic nannies step in anytime the the truck starts moving laterally (donuts and power-slides or drifting as they call it these days......)

with the traction control off and once tires were spinning, it felt smooth. occasionally would get some hop, but was able to modulate the pedal ...its a live and learn moment , and will be a funny story about my "smarts"

I blew apart a number of 7-1/4 rears in my 67 Dart. The spider pin was the weak link. I fixed the first one then after that I got different rears at the local junk yard. That was over 40 years ago :) So my suggestion is if you cant fix it easily an whole rear might be the way to go. Of course if 4x4 the ratio must match the front. BTW in my 70 Dart I pulled out the 7-1/4 and replaced it with a 8-3/4 from a Duster 340. That thing was bullet proof!

The only way I know you can install one is buying the locker for the Chrysler 9.25 as well a driver side axle that needs to be installed on the passenger side. Yes you basically need 2 driver length axles to fit both sides of the vehicle with this new differential.

Eaton is releasing their zf Model specific locker next month That will not require new axle shafts. Not soon enough for OP unfortunately.

my rear is a lsd and the kit for spider gears isnt a bad price so i just plan to repair . truck isnt a daily driver and rarely will see any real off road action so it will serve my needs . but interesting that options are coming out for those guys that do play hard and work hard

It seems burnouts and drag racing is catastrophic to the stock open or clutch pack, spring loaded Limited slip style.

This new offering will be nice.

I love this thread. Sooooo familiar, how many of us have blowed **** up in a mad moment of youthful glee? Body or machine? I’m 50 but my brain is 20ish.
I’m 25 and am thankfully have yet to break my truck. Probably shouldn’t say that but it’s true. I did break a motor mount off on a 09 VW Jetta and the factory dual mass flywheel took a crap on me so I installed a stage 1 racing clutch and solid flywheel.

Dude, you’re not livin’ but it’s definitely easier on the wallet. Be patient it’ll come.
