Hi,

I have a 2006 Ram 5.7 with over 200K on the odometer. When MDS engages, I feel a slight power loss and hear more lifter noise than when MDS is not engaged. It's most apparent if I have the driver's window rolled down and am passing an island adjacent to the leftmost lane. I have looked into this issue and read other people describing it as sounding like a spoke card. From what I read, one of the theories was that when the MDS engages on a high mileage 5.7, it puts more stress on the 4 lifters that are still active and that's what causes the noise. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, but it sounded the most plausible.

I wanted to see if this type of lifter noise is considered normal operation with these engines as they age. At this point, I would like to disable MDS. My next question, is, what software and/or scan tool would a private shop need to have in order to disable MDS or flash the PCM if I didn't want to have the dealer do it? I called one shop in my area and they didn't even know what MDS was. Another shop told me they weren't able to do it.

I also have been getting a P1521 code: Incorrect engine oil viscosity. However, 5W-20 is the only oil that's ever been added to the crankcase. The oil pressure sending unit has already been replaced twice in the past. One of the remedies for this issue is a TSB which recommends reflashing the PCM. So, I am hoping to have the PCM reflashed with the latest update and turn MDS off. I have access to a Diablosport Predator 2. All I would use it for would be to disable MDS, and not to upload a tune. If I were to disable MDS using that, would the dealer or a shop be able to write over that tune with a factory tune to address the P1521 issue, if the PCM is the culprit? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a 2007 5.7 with mds. Mine has 146k on it. Since I bought the truck it has always made a lot more noise in 4 cyl mode with mds engaged. As far as the oil viscosity goes, is a check engine light on? If not i would try a different scanner. I bought 2 scanners and one says incorrect oil viscosity on every vehicle I test so I know its not the truck. Slight chance this is your issue but I would try it with a different scanner maybe your scanner is doing the same thing mine is

I get wrong oil viscosity as well on my scan tool. As far as MDS noise, I do notice it kick on and off, only cause I have a aftermarket exhaust system. I hate the sound when it kicks on. So I drive my truck in O/D off in the city to temporarily disable it. It kicks on when I'm on the freeway, but not as often. That's the only noise I hear. If there is valve noise, my exhaust is too loud for me to hear anything. But I would imagine, you will have some valve noise. But not 100% on that. As far as Deleting your MDS, I know there are tuners like the ones you mentioned, that can disable it. But its pretty integrated into the system. I know you can replace your lifters with non-MDS lifters. Make that hemi a full time V8 beast. But that's also a lot more involved.

mds goes off in tow haul mode or when you shift into manual mode, and it's free.

That's what I thought but my "Eco" light stays on on my overhead monitor even when Tow/haul is on. Doesn't that mean MDS is still on? I want it off!

Ah. I just assumed it meant MDS was engaged. Then what the heck is the ECO light for? Damn sure ain't because I'm getting great mileage!

Sorry for the hijack.

Depends on the year of the truck, but in 2019+ 5th gens, ECO light is tied directly to MDS. Not sure at what point the change was made.
