I am new to the Ram trucks and seen a post the other day about lifter failure and its possible relation to idle time. I went and pull up the info on my 2019 Big Horn Classic that I bought in April and found my 5.7 Hemi has a total of 1089 hours of run time. Idle time is 502 and drive hours are 587. Should I be concerned about these figures?

Someone let that thing idle a lot. I bet it was used by a contractor who sat in it running while working.

I wouldn’t keep a truck with more than 15% idle hours. Mine is at about 4% right now.

Remember idle hour's also count when you are sitting at a light and possibly when there is no load on the engine. Also these trucks can be a bit odd when counting hour's. Those are kinda high idle hour's but depending on where you live and traffic may be "normal"

I am not sure how it was used before I bought it. It was in use from 2-14-2019 and I purchased it in April of this year. I am a bit concerned of the amount of hours as it seemed high to me but I do have an extended warranty just in case I need it.
I was unaware that I could see this info when I was searching for a truck... live and learn I guess.

According to FCA anything over 20% is excessive so that’s quite excessive. If you had the eco diesel I’d be really worried but not as much with the hemi. I’d run some good oil in that thing like redline for sure.

Check all the fluids. U may want to change front/rear diff and also engine oil with a good product like PUP Full Synthetic or Redline full synthetic. Then drive, enjoy and keep up the MX. All IMHO..........................

My son has over 300 idle hours on his (that was several months ago, probably over 400 now). He has about 70,000 miles on his 2018 6.4. He spends a bunch of time in his truck at job sites and lets it run practically all day most days. In the summer he has the air running and in the winter the heat is on. He is in Texas now so may not need to leave it run in the winter now. IIRC last he told me a few months ago he had about 550 hours of run time and 350 idle time so about 65% or so idle time.

Whats the issue with having so many idle hrs? Never knew there could be an underlying issue.

Many of the Police Pursuit Package Chargers with the 5.7L utilized by law enforcement have far higher idle hours with no issues. Trust me, I know this as I was responsible for purchasing twenty of them in 2008 and they were retired only once they hit 160,000 miles and not because the they had idle time that makes yours look tiny. Do a Google search for “Dodge Police Pursuit Charger idle hours” and you can read up on it.

Idling isn’t great for any vehicle but the impact can be minimized by following the severe duty service schedule.

I think some fishyness happens with the idle hrs. I don't know if the drive hrs reset or the dealer does it. But the first six months I owned it I was 20201019_085527.jpg under 20 percent.

Do you race this thing? There must be something weird going on, how did you get that many miles in that many driving hours? Apparently you drive an average of around 135/mph!!
