As the title says, my "Axle Unlock" light is blinking for some reason.

It first started doing this yesterday after switching to 4H during the snow that just came through. Noticed it would blink when moving, then at times would stay solid (as it should) when at a stop. I'd start moving again, and it would start to blink. Kept it under 50 the entire time and this occurred at all speeds.

Later in the day when the roads were plowed and I switched back to 2WD, it continued to blink at all speeds.

This morning it blinked my entire way into the office in 2WD.

Called my Service Advisor and he wants me to bring it and take a look as he's not heard of this before. Dropping it off on Thursday. I took a few videos of it doing this in 4H and in 2WD in case they are unable to "replicate" it when it's in their hands....

Anyone have any experience with this? Searched the forum and could not find another thread with this issue. I read the manual, doesn't touch on why it would be blinking like this.

For the record, I've only ever locked the front and rear axles once, and that was to confirm the lockers would engage. As soon as they engaged, I unlocked and have yet to ever lock them, let alone shift into 4L.

Thoughts? It does not seem to be effecting the drivability.

Thanks!

GD

Watch this Video and see if the info helps: I only have a Low tier Bighorn 1500, so not a lot of knowledge. NOW, the one thing I have always done for years is this: When taking out of 4 wheel drive, back up a few feet first, then take out of 4 wheel, helps drive train (IMHO). I also back up a few more feet before going forward, sometimes help the drivetrain. Especially since 1500 4WD is clutches. Not sure on the Power Wagon ref clutches.

MAYBE BRANDON-W can chime in...

Yeah, it’s a thing on some PW. I have it. There are some prior threads but probably not easy to find.

Some people have success with changing the axle fluid and cleaning the iron dust deposits that accumulate around the locker magnet.

Others have been resolved replacing the position sensor.

Mine first appeared around 1,000 miles or so and became more frequent until I did the fluid change, which cured it for a while. It’s reappeared around 10k. Most often in cold weather and clearing up when the axle heats up. I’m taking it to the dealer next month for some other things and I’ll let them deal with it for round 2.

Yeah I watched that when I first got the truck as it aids with info on how to lock and unlock your axles, but doesn't give any "troubleshooting" info. Surprised the manual does not either.

You'd think that if Ram programmed the light to blink for some reason, that they'd tell you why that is... That would make too much sense though lol

Interesting. So this is a known thing after all huh? I'll be sure to notify the service advisor of the axle fluid change and locker cleaning as a possible (temporary?) solution and replacing the position sensor as well.

Will definitely update as things move forward.

first i would go talk to experts on powerwagon registry. theres a guy named blmrig that seems to be highly knowledgable in the electronic aspects

im not sure how the 4x4 system is tied together electrically but i know the magnets have a required airgap. the service manual mentions improper gap can cause trouble you describe

Same thing happen to my 2019 power wagon. It will not affect the drive ability. However, this light stayed on in my power wagon for a week, a week later it went away. A week after that I went to lock my rear axle to sling some DO DO for fun and all of sudden “service axle locker system” appeared. Blinking non stop. Brought it to the dealer, fixed under warranty, new bearings, new rear actuator and new switches. About 1200$ if this happens and it isn’t under warranty. Hopefully mine never malfunctions again.

Was not aware of that site. Will dig around for sure, thanks!

Well feed me nails and call me rusty.

Thanks for responding, will definitely let my SA know about this when I drop it off! Hoping there isn't a 52-week lead time for the parts!

Awesome man thank you!

Mine 2019 has done it since I bought it new. Changing the diff fluid and cleaning the magnets helped, but it still does it periodically. Sometimes it will do it several days in a row, and sometimes I'll go for a month or two and not notice it. It seems to always do it within the first 5 miles of driving it then it seems to go away. It's so sporadic on mine it would be really difficult for the dealer troubleshoot I think. I'm waiting until it either does it pretty consistently, or I get close to the end of warranty and have them do a thorough inspection of all the systems it could be.
