Snowed here today about 4 inches. I left my house and popped her into 4 HI just to test it out. When I got to the stop light I went to put it into park to switch out of 4 hi and it will not go into park. Now the check engine light is on and it's got me worried. Any ideas........

When I arrived to work I tried it again with no luck. Didn't know if the warning lights would go off on the dash so I went to nutraul and pulled the positive off the battery terminal.

Not that it should lead to the problem you are encountering, but why did you attempt putting it in Park to take it out of 4 Hi? You can go in and out of 4WD Auto and 4 Hi from 2WD at speed...

I don't know why I did that. Just was sitting at the stop sign and thought I'd put it over to park before I switched the transfer case over.

So, I'm doing some reading and found a few posts where people had trouble with snow/slush packing around the transmission linkage. I have my truck in the parking garage so maybe some of that will melt by the time I try to leave in the morning

depending on what I'm reading the 8 speed doesn't have a linkage so snow packing around it would be false.

I think a trip to the dealer is in order. You can switch between 4auto, 4 lock and 2wd while driving as mentioned above. No need to switch to park unless you are going to 4lo.

If you got a check engine light something is up. There shouldn't be any external linkage on the 5th gen tcase but im not 100% sure.

Went out and put the positive cable back on the battery. Got in, started up the truck, all warnings are gone. Figured that would happen when I unhooked the battery. I cycled the shift knob 3-5 time into and out of park and it had no issues. Thought about trying to move it over to 4 hi and then shift around on the knob a few times but figured I'd be better off making it home first.

Was it going into park but blinking, or would is physically not move into the park position?

So I took it into the dealership and they told me that ice, snow, and sleet got packed up around one side of the transmission and caused it to not go into park. Haven't had a problem since.
