I recently bought a 03 2500 4X4 to tow my 7600 lb camper with. My question is where can I find a drop hitch that will accept my load leveling hitch. My camper is not one of the newer one that look like they have a lift kit on them, my sits what I would call car to 1/2 ton height. Another question is do I even need a load leveling hitch? I don’t anticipate the back end of the truck going down much at all. It looks like I might need at least a 8” drop.

What kind of load leveling hitch do you have? I’m not really familiar with WD hitches but I guess of you just have one that’s not really adjustable height wise, Gen-Y makes a hitch that’s pretty much 4 receiver tubes in one.

A weight distribution hitch with antisway is the way to go if safety is a concern......it also keeps your rig level.

That’s what I have. It bolts onto the hitch with two bolts but the hitch I currently have only has 4 holes for about a 3” drop and I need more. It has the hookups for load levelers and stabilizer bars on it.

So you have one of them gen-y hitches?

As far as whether or not you need a weight distribution hitch, here’s some good info regarding that.

Fastway trailer says that a specific weight doesn’t necessarily dictate went to use a weight distribution hitch, but it does say that once your trailer starts to weigh the same, or outweighs your tow vehicle then that’s when you need weight distribution hitch. They also say that if you’re pulling a large travel trailer or large enclosed trailer, something that’ll be greatly affected by Crosswinds that you should be using one of those weight distribution hitch is for that.

But according to a three-year-old article from Truck Trend, they say that anything over 5000 pounds for a halfton but for a heavy duty, it’s anywhere from 6000 to 8500 pounds. I’m assuming that’s probably specifying between a 3/4-ton and one-ton, dually or SRW.

I'm sure you can find a shank for your existing weight distribution hitch to get the appropriate drop; what brand is it?

A WDH isn't just for leveling the truck and trailer. It's for exactly what it's name implies, Weight Distribution Hitch. 800-100 lbs in the bed isn't much weight for a 2500, but when that weight is applied about four feet behind the rear axle now you have a teater-totter lightening up the front end of the truck. A WDH forces weight back onto the front axle. Some even think using airbags do the same thing, that the farthest thing from the truth.

Looking through some old threads. Bulletproof had a great series of drop hitches and you can buy accessories like a WDH connector. People there are great and will work with you over the phone to ensure you get the right unit.
