I like the wrap around milk crate topped with plywood idea. Maybe set it up so it is easily dismantled for storage.
Right now I use a single milk crate or short step ladder

In May of 2018 I decided to change the plugs in my 5.7 Rumble Bee. Thanks to the PO never changing the plugs I fought most of them getting them out. The very last plug on the driver's side snapped off right below the hex. I wound up having to pull the head. Through all of that I stood on the tailgate of one of my Dodge Rampages and used a pool floatie as a cushion as I leaned over to work.20180526_192641.jpg

Built a stool for this purpose for driver's side (I am 6' 2").I do sit on the passenger fender alot, to get up there I use a two rung ladder. The second rung is deep and allows me to keep tools for wrenching (which I like ) Both feet firmly on the frame, I do crouch when working around distributor area. (Watch the soles of your hush puppies ! Sharp metal screw tips were holding my splash guards to frame. ((First Gen Dodge '88 D100))

I feel better that you tall men have problems ... I'm a 5'0 chick yes five foot even!
I stand on the tow hook or in the wheel to check oil etc or use a 2 step ladder. That tire step is exactly what I need I've never seen one before.

It's kind of funny watching me try to get around under the hood I feel like a little kid playing with daddy's truck lol.

Thankfully haven’t had to do any major repairs on the RAM yet. Here’s me replacing the high pressure oil pump on my 04 F250. Spent quite a while in this position. Thought it was weird (has to be a better way) until I saw pics online of others doing the same. Small step stool to get up there then an old stadium seat cushion to lay on.

I am 77 years old, 5' 8" & over weight, i use one of my two Werner 2 step aluminium ladders
I can use both at once with a couple of 2X6s fastened together if i really need to.
The dealership or other shops do the harder jobs

FYI.. the gorilla ladders are on sale @ HD right now for about half off for the next 4 days via a special buy

I use 2 gorilla ladders and a Werner ladder. Just broke down and finally bought a topside creeper a few minutes ago.

I REALLY want this topside creeper, but it's too costly...

I have 2 different ones i use, first is a folding floor stool, I think is 9 inches high, second is tire attachment type to get you further into the engine bay. Both were inexpensive and easily found in stores.

There's a reason I have a werner and two gorilla ladders platforms lol. I like the gorilla platforms better. They're a little taller and longer but slightly more narrow. I like the locking mechanism better as well. Having 3 makes it a lot easier to cut in the top of the walls while painting.

It looks like these newer gorilla ladders may not be quite as tall since the feet fold flat against the platform compared to my old ones, or they may just be longer. I like that they added the handle to the middle.
