I recently noticed my '13 Ram Bighorn (5.7L with the 8 speed transmission) wasn't blowing much more than luke warm heat. It got to be noticeable once temperatures got down to freezing temperatures and below. This is the conventional manual heating system by the way, not auto climate.

I replaced the thermostat just as a routine maintenance item and drained/flushed the heater core. The core isn't blocked by any stretch, and afterward the heater temperature improved, but it's still fairly cool, especially in the teens. Unfortunately, when it gets to that point, operating the defrost (which automatically runs the AC compressor) takes it from lukewarm to cool which doesn't do much to help keep the windshield clear.

When I drained the heater core, I noticed the 3 way valve that diverts coolant to the transmission, and remembered that it seems to take longer for the transmission to reach operating temperature than it did previously. Is there any potential for that valve to be stuck, limiting the mount of fluid that goes to the heater core? I would think that might throw an error code, but if it's in between it might end up keeping the temperature in the normal operating parameters.

Anyone run into any issues/problems with the 3-way valve? Seems to be unique to the 8 speed in the Hemi setup anyway. My dad's '11 with the 6 speed doesn't have that valve at all.

I'm not commenting on whether the valve is your issue,but they have been known to be a little finicky.Here's a video on how to replace it.

Thanks for the info...that's about the only mention about the valve that I'd found when I started digging into it. There's a few links on where to get it and how to change it, but almost no mention about the failure modes...what happens when it quits working? It's funny that no one seems to address that part!

Theres been a couple guys on here that have had issues with them leaking,that's about all i have heard.But if Motor City Mechanic has done a video on replacing the valve,i'm gonna think maybe they give trouble more often then a guy thinks

Just a bit of information about the climate control system;

There are 4 actuators that are controlled by the climate control knobs.
These control everything that the CC can do, turn each knob separately to see just what happens, that will give you a good idea of just what is working.
If everything seems to be working correctly, except for the High position of the fan, i suggest that you look under the glove compartments.
There may be something blocking the air suction of the CC unit.
If there is nothing there, then watch this video

For anyone having Gen 4 Climate Control issues, this video covers trouble shooting fairly well

That is funny that I have heard of people having to replace the coolant 3-way valve, but I don't know why or what their symptoms were!

I do know that sometime around 2018 with the Ram 1500 classic hemis, FCA did away with this valve. My 2019 classic hemi has just a plastic spool piece in where the coolant 3-way used to be.

This makes me wonder if it really does anything special for your cabin heat. I would think if the cabin heat is poor and the transmission isn't heating up, what does your engine coolant temp run at?
