Hey guys

Bought a 5.7 RCSB Ram 1500 recently. Looking to upgrade my exhaust. What I WANT is something with a nice old-school muscle sound that has a good roar when you step on it (some hp gain is nice too). What I DON'T want is a loud-all-the-time exhaust that's going to drive me nuts with constant droning and make me look/sound like an a-hole to pedestrians.

That being said, I like all the sound clips I hear of Flowmaster's American Thunder series exhaust system. On paper, it's the right amount of volume without all the drone. Can anyone attest to that? I'd hate to spend the money on an exhaust system and then hate it bc of interior drone. Am I better off with just the American Thunder muffler vs the cat-back, or a different system all together? Let me hear your guys' thoughts and experiences.

Thanks![/QUOT

I had a simple super 40 single welded into the existing OEM pipe. It sounds amazing, and feel maybe there was an incremental performance increase. My cost was 300 bucks. I stand by the flow master upgrade

I installed a flowmaster super 40 in my 2016 Ram. It was toooo loud. Waking up the neighbors. I replaced it with super 50. It’s perfect and hardly any drone. Deep rich sound.

Same here, my last flowmaster droned pretty bad at highway speeds, but sounded great around town. It also only lasted about 4 years before it rusted out. Depends where you live, SS may be your best choice regardless which you choose.

I'm in the south, so I'm not SO worried about it rusting out as there's no salt or snow here in the winter. Still, it's interesting to me that so many of you see them rust out so quickly.

Just a public service announcement for those who value saving some cheddar or who might not know.... The factory exhaust piping is already mandrel bent (after the Y pipe). So, there's little to no reason to shell out big bucks on a cat back system from a performance stand point.

What's your take on removing the resonators? Most catback systems seem to remove them. Do you think there's any significant increase in flow to be had by removing them? I understand resonators are more or less "straight through" but I believe they do change the way the exhaust pulses travel as they pass through. Whether that's going to affect performance or not, I don't know - educate me.

Resonators help reduce/eliminate the 'blat blat' sound on deceleration with a performance muffler.
I'm running muffler-delete and left them on and I have no blatting sound at all.

You're correct, they are a straight through design. Whether you leave them on or not will most likely depend on the muffler you choose. I left the resonator on when I first installed my Magnaflow. After driving for a while and becoming comfortable with the sound of the exhaust I ended up cutting off the resonator. Didn't make a huge difference, just gave it a little more growl. Had I gone with a louder, chambered exhaust like Flowmaster, I probably would have left them on. Magnaflows are baffled so you tend to get less drone. I chose the quietest Magnaflow I could find because baffled mufflers will get louder over time as the packing material settles and wears down. Mine has a nice low growl, doesn't offend the neighbors, and still sounds mean when I get on it. Exhaust is tough because it's so subjective. Everybody wants something different so you really have to do some research and decide what end result you want to achieve.

Thrush welded makes the 5.7 sound the way it it's meant to sound. If you don't have long tube headers, you won't get drone. I had a magnaflow but it sounded flubbery when I would step on the gas. Before that, the Flowmaster 40 series had a clapping inside of a tin can effect that gets old quuuiiicckkkkkk.

Have you ever checked out the Carven series mufflers? I have the Progressive, which is the quieter option and think it really sounds amazing. Nice deep growl to it and as the name states it "progressively" gets louder with more skinny pedal. The idle isn't too loud and there's little drone at highway speeds. Direct bolt-in, great quality (it's stainless). Been running it on mine for about a year and a half and it still makes me grin whenever I get into the throttle.

I haven't checked out the Carven's. I'll do some research on them and see if they might tickle my fancy

I've installed a lot of different brand catbacks and Flowmaster is kinda to loud and rot out quick. on my ram I love the magnaflow catback has a nice sound and will last a long time. borla is good to
Rot out?? Doubt it. Have three vehicles with 40's on them all three are over 7 years old, not rot, no rust, perfect sound - actually one is a 40 delta and other two are regular 40's. All; were put on vehicles - oneCharger, oneChallenger, one RAM - all 5.7 hemo motors - all 15 -18K per year mile use. Getting ready toput a new one on anew RAM, probably a 50 delta with resonators retained. So Flowmasters are the best, period. Magnaflow tend to be too loud, Gibsons tend to be rattely. Good luck.

I went through this exact exercise and research before I pulled the trigger on my exhaust upgrade. I was told multiple times that Flowmaster = Dronemaster so I spent the extra cash and bought the Corsa Performance Exhaust. Sounds excellent and zero drone on the high so big momma doesn't get pissed on long trips. Also bought the Black tips and it looks great, I can send you a clip of mine if you want, but this one is a good to give you an idea of the sound.

+1 for the Carven Progressive. Had mine on for a few weeks now and I love it, especially with a cold start in a parking garage. Really simple install too as long as your factory muffler isn't rust-welded on. Took me 2 hours to get the factory muffler off, 20 minutes to get the Carven on.

Carven also has a couple of quality videos on youtube for comparison of their Progressive vs Competitor series that details the install process as well, linked it below.

On the highway I sometimes forget it's on there. Under normal acceleration you can hear it but it's not "loud". Step on it and it sounds amazing. The only "drone" I get is steep uphill at highway speeds and even then you don't have to raise your voice to talk to a passenger.

Edit: Whoops, didn't notice you're in a '19. Looks like they may have a similar video for that year.

My experience with Flowmaster is deafening drone and sound. I think the stock sounds meaty.

Definitely stay away from the super 10 if you don't want really loud. Just put it on my 2014 and it is loud!
