So like everybody else getting hit by this deep freeze moving through. I plugged my 20 model 6.7 ho hd in for the first time yesterday. I tested the house plug, my heavy Extention cord, and they both work, so what I expected and what I got were two different things. I was going to remote start my truck around noon today and then said no, I'm going to jump in it to see if the wait to start light with the wait to start contdown comes on to make sure my block heater is working, obviously hoping that I didn't see the countdown. Well unfortunately j did get the wait to start with the countdown. After the countdown, it fired right up with out Any trouble. Is this normal. On the 96 model ram 3500 i had when you plugged it up, the glow plug light would never come on, so what's changed or did the Yahoo's in saltillo Mexico just zip tie my plug on and not screw it into the block.
It *** plugged in for 24hrs and was 17 degrees low and 30 degrees high

Not sure they may have changed the parameters for when the intake heater comes on, probably did.

Usually you can hear the block heater working, crackle /sizzling 20 seconds or so after plugging it in cold

It's normal. Also, the factory remote start on the diesels has a delay programmed in for the intake heater to do it's prestart.

Does that have anything to do with , unless it's over around 60 degrees out, that wai to start countdown Comes on every time, over 60 degrees everything is normal. Seems to be set for awfully warm weather to still have a countdown.
Also, I never heard any oil warming or heating and I felt the connection from truck plug to house cord and it never was warm like it was doing something. Like I said, the cord is good, plugged a heater into it.

It’s two different things.

The block heaters main goal is to get the oil warm so it’s not molasses. When oil is that thick it’s a huge load on the batteries and starter.

The grid heater is to warm the incoming air charge. The grid heater comes on based on ambient/intake air temps so even if the blocks warmish, there’s still gonna be cold air coming in.

Dig out your multimeter and do an ohm test on the cord,if it's an open circuit it'll show on the meter, and either the cords not plugged into the block heater,or it's got a break in it somewhere .

Ahhhhhhh, my rumbling Cummins likes cold air in the intake.
Ive never really looked at my oil temperature at start up before but that does remind me that I did look at it and it showed 78,D but honestly I didn't know if it would actually register as low as it was and not just start at a set number, like 78
Also to add, when is banks coming out with there cai for the new 6.7s

Well im assuming that it works then because it got Down in the teens last night and around 30 during the day and when it turned over, it started right up with no extra sluggishness

On the gas engines, the block heater is hidden behind the starter
In most cases, the starter cover, if not the whole starter has to be unbolted to install it

On the diesel engine, the block heater is sort of hidden by the oil filter, as shown below

Yup it was a bugger to find. When i first got the truck, i periodically looked for days, finally found it behind the front license plate bracket. I un zip tied the end and re routed out tow hook hole to be more convienant.
