I currently own a2017 Laramie 1500. Thinking about upgrading to a 2500. We tore an 8000lb camper. We don’t go out a whole bunch. Was thinking of buying the gas instead of the diesel. Any one have the gas 2500 and tore anything close to an 8000lb camper? If so, does it do ok? What kind of mileage etc.

Chris, I believe there is an mpg thread in the HD section. You'll see mpg for different types of driving.

I've towed a 7500 lbs camper with a 2015 6.4L 2500 and ~9000 trailer w/a 90 w250 12v on it from Connecticut to upstate NY. On my 15 w/camper I think I Ave about 8-9 mpg through the mountains and somewhere around 12 on my 18 w/trailer.

Edit : I should add both truck's have/had 3:73 gears. The 15 had stock size m/ts on aftermarket wheels, and mufflex exhaust and the 18 has 35's on aftermarket wheels and a borla xr-1 40086 Muffler.

I upgraded from a '09 1500 5.7 with 3.92 gears to a 2017 2500 CC LB 6.4 with 4.10 gears.
Brother, I will never go back to a 1500 truck ever again. 1500 was capable but I could feel the 9000 lbs trailer pushing me around. Made the ********* pucker up a few times.
In the 2500, I gotta keep checking the rear view mirror to see if the trailer is still there. Milage is combined about 9 or 10 mpg.

If i was going to get a gas 2500, I'd get the big engine, 8 speed, and LSD 4.10s.

After buying a camper, and a big 2500, it doesn't make any sense to worry much about the minuscule difference, if any, in fuel economy.

I towed my 9500lb boat and my son tows his 8100lb camper with out 2018 2500's both with the 6.4 and 4.10's and no problems at all. Should get about 8-9MPG but you will struggle to get that in a 1500 too. Empty the 1500 will get better mileage for sure. I get average about 12.2 hand calculated in mine as you can see from my fuelly link below. But yeah a 2500 is the way to go for sure. You are likely over payload with your 1500 anyway

On the 18 did you remove the resonators when you installed the borla? Do you have any resonance with the borla?

In 5th gear around 1400-1600 rpm at light throttle I do.

8,000 lbs. is not a big trailer at all for that truck. A typical 2500 6.4 gas truck is rated from the factory for 14,000-15,000 lb. towing capacity.

I've towed a 13k pound 5th wheel with my 2020 6.4, 4.1, 2500. It towed fine, but it did suck gas. I was close to 7 mpg. But, I got the Hemi instead of a 3500 diesel because I don't tow more than a couple times a year. (I couldn't go with the 2500 diesel because of the tongue weight).

I don't think that mileage is that bad. My son gets about 8 towing his 8100lb bumper pull camper with his 2018 2500 6.4 4.10's. You are pulling 5000 more lbs and not that much worse mileage

Since the OP lives in no hills FL and does not tow heavy or often, I think a gas 2500 is the perfect answer. The heavier duty brakes, tranny, frame, etc will make the towing experience much nicer than a 1500.

Get a 2500 with 4.10 gears and 5th wheel prep because you will get a larger TT.

We have a 2020 Power wagon, we have a camper with a dry weight of 8,400 lbs. Drove from Colorado to Tyler TX to pick it up, on the way to Tyles (no trailer) we averaged around 13mpg, on the way back with the camper we averaged 7mpg. The power wagon pulls the camper fine and it handles great. I used to run Deisels, but had so many issues in the mountains with the new emmisions & DEF fluid that we went back to a gas model, and I'm loving it

I bought a new 3500 Big Horn 4x4 short box in 2018. It has 6.4 hemi and 4.10 axles. Old truck was a Ford diesel super duty.

I had some anxiety because I tow a big living quarters horse trailer with a GVWR of 14,000 lb. I took the truck and trailer on a long road trip to buy a horse in Oklahoma. Anxiety was gone after that trip.

I had plenty of power even when going uphill in a headwind. I was shocked when I calculated my mpg. I use the Fuelly app, and the round trip mpg was 9.6 over 3000 miles!

Performance should be even better now with the new 8 speed tranny.

I towed a 7000lbs camper and currently tow a 5900lbs camper. I have gotten as low as 7MPG and as high as 10MPG. The only gripe I have is that the fuel tank is too small and there is no easy way to add a bigger tank or more capacity for the gas trucks.
