The AC compressor definitely runs all the time in AUTO mode. I do the same as @Ricks Ram and use AUTO in the summer but mostly manual the rest of the time.

I was under the impression that the reason for installing a humidity sensor was so the compressor didn't stay on constantly in auto. I have a 19 classic 1500 and have a humidity sensor harness on order. I upgraded to an 8.4 and right now I'm playing the guess the temperature game.

The purpose if the humidity sensor is so the compressor doesn't run continuously in manual mode. Without the sensor the compressor runs continuously whenever the system is on in either manual or automatic no matter what selection you have it set at. With the sensor the compressor runs continuously in auto which is the way it's designed to work but doesn't run when in manual mode unless needed and doesn't come on at all when set on vent.

I think I misunderstood. I was thinking of manual vs auto as being the settings in the bcm and your talking about disengaging the auto selection with the switch on the fan speed button or radio screen.

Thank you to MPGrimm, Deere Guy and everyone that contributed to this thread. I have a 2015 3500 Bighorn and the only thing I wished it had was auto climate. I just added that feature using an OBD Genie and it is working perfectly. As Beemer533 pointed out, the temp sensor harness is already present in 2500/3500 Bighorns, so I just needed to buy and install the temp sensor. The entire project took 5 minutes.

I can confirm that heated seats, heated steering wheel, back defrost, etc. all work as before. The driver seat and steering wheel heat come on with remote start as expected. The up/down temperature buttons work correctly as do all the controls on the 8.4 screen. I love it!

Just want to send out an apology to whomever I was helping the other day... If you see this please message/email me back since I got busy and couldn't recall who it was ...

I was helping a customer of mine over the phone that did the Single Zone ATC upgrade/8.4 conversion and they wanted to get rid of the Sun Sensor error codes by switching out the standard 2pin sensor for the Auto Headlight ONLY Sensor to the upgraded 4 pin Sensor that has the Headlight/Dual Sun Sensor output. Only to find out that their truck likely doesn't have the 2 wires from the original 24 pin hvac connector behind the dash to the sensor at the center of the dash (only 2 wires at the Sensor connector).

I am fairly certain @Ricks Ram and @STecoD went down this path, but their truck may have already had the wiring in the factory dash harness to make the swap easy. If you see this, here is the difference in the wiring and SunSensor info... (Also see posts 440-450).

You are correct. Our trucks both had the correct wiring. Our Sun Sensor connectors had 4 wires but our original Sun Sensors were only utilizing two of those wires. We were able to buy the correct 4 pin Sun Sensors that came in the factory ATC equipped trucks. We were able to get rid of the Sun Sensor error code after installing the new Sun Sensor. My truck is a 14 Express 1500 4X4 and his is a 15 Tradesman.

Rick did it make any difference in the operation of the ATC?

No, not that I noticed. Possibly the only thing that may have changed is that the A/C seemed to blow harder when the sun was glaring on the window but it may have just been me over thinking it. I didn't notice anything substantial about the operation changing. The DTC codes for the Sun Sensor did go away though.

Ok so this maybe a stupid question but what is the point of this mod?

It gives you Automatic control of the HVAC system in the truck. It will speed up/slow down the fan, change where the air comes out, and turn of the heat/AC just by what temperature is set. You doi have to worry about forgetting to set the heat, defrost or AC, the system will do that for you when you start the vehicle, especially handy when remote starting.
It might sound trivial to have but it's nice to have and depending on how your truck is equiped is a fairly inexpensive mod.

It also fixes a manual temperature control glitch that occurs when upgrading from the 5 inch radio to the 8.4 inch radio.

I put in a pioneer stereo and haven’t had any issues with it.

So will it work with manual controls? I took out the stock radio and put in a pioneer stereo and still have manual hvac controls

You need the 7 speed fan but what might cause a problem is the aftermarket radio. Some of them don't recognize single zone ATC as it was not a factory option.
With your truck being a HD it's a good probability the wiring for the cabin temperature sensor is already there. You could buy the sensor and try enabling it with AlfaOBD but there's no guarantee it will work. I think the sensor is about $30

There is much more to making a Single Zone ATC bezel than just swapping the knobs/button assy around. You have to modify the control board.

Here's a disassembly video I posted for someone else previously ...

M² Mods.
