More likely the CP4 with 6 dots. I am looking forward to replacing it with CP3 or CP4.2 without charge from the Chrysler FCA warranty. I heard that Bosch got a lawsuit recently for CP4 unreliable fuel pump. I just bought a new 2020 RAM 2500 diesel.

Very sure that's a CP4 pump. The CP4.2 has one large dimple where your 6blittle inones are.

so you going to change it at no cost at the dealership you got your truck?!
did you call already and they do it based on the warranty?! even if the cp4 is still working

Detailes , we need details. I'm ready to drive 1500 miles to my dealership and get it swapped before she blows, just turned 10,000 miles and have stressed about it on every trip. I do use hot shot edt w/lx4 and stand alone lx4, so hopefully, mine has plenty of lube to hold up until a recall

They're all CP4.2 pumps, the dots have to do with cam lobe design revision.

Haha, a little pricey to sleep at night, but it would be cheaper than replacing$17,000 worth of fuel system damage.
2019+ RAM CP3 Conversions
$1,750.00 – $4,130.00
From my understanding they didn't change from the cp4- cp4.2 untill around the middle of the year. I ordered mine in January and it arrived in March , pretty sure the 19s and early 20s are the cp4s, but i could be wrong. Isn't the only difference between the two bein either symmetrical or asymmetrical. I would definitly rather weather the stress storm in the most current model . for a while there it seemed like everyone's pump was letting go between 3000-10000 miles. I have seen quite a few different versions of a bypass kit that you can reroute your fuel so only the pump takes the damage. Don't want that baby letting go running with my fiver and losing power and brakes:eek:

Q: My new Ecodiesel is still unassembled, ordered in November. Which pump will it get?
It will have a CP4.2 just like all the other built. Just an FYI on the longevity of this pump, VernDiesel has taken his EcoDiesel to over 700K miles between two motors towing trailers, Vern's buddy has over 400K miles on his EcoD neither one has had a CP4.2 failure. There is a several more members with over 200K each I know of also.
The original CP4 got it's bad rap from the era of vehicles that did not use lift pumps in the tank. The CTD and EcoD both use lift pumps.

Yes. My reply was written horribly inaccurate. You are correct. All those are the CP4.2 pumps. The only difference is the cam design.

I just purchased a 2020 Ram2500 with the 6.7L engine (manufactured date of 8/20) and it has the CP4.2 pump. :(
I haven't been able to find any information about the identification dots on the unit. Do I have latest revision? Is it more reliable than other revisions?

Here's a picture of it.

You have the revised cp4 with the symmetrical cam. The only thing that discerns the new design from old is the presence of this single large dimple. The smaller dimples below it have no bearing on what pump design it is - vHOZMIA.jpg

CP4 is a fundamentally poor design, no matter the version.

Thanks for your responses. I'll probably keep the CP4 pump up till about the time the basic warranty expires, then I'll purchase a CP4 to CP3 conversion kit to replace it unless Ram or Cummins recalls the units first.

Has anybody heard of this before? I went to schedule my first oil change and just told them that my fuel pump occasionally make a tap or rattle sound during acceleration and it would hesitate throttle response. My main thing was to just have notes put into the system so there was a record. She said no problem, will schedule you for a diagnostics test. She then said just so your aware , if nothing shows up, you will have to pay for the diagnostics test, if something does show up, your warrnty will cover it. I told her never mind. We are ful time time travelers and were only going to be here for another week i told her. She wouldn't even get me loaner with out charging me until it was deemed covered by warranty. She had my vin # and new i was a new model.
I personally think, she saw my out of state phone # and once she saw my vin, knew I didn't get it from them, so she thought she would shank me. I'll be dag gummed if I'm gonna pay for a diagnostics test and a loaner, hahaha. Ill wait until we settle for a month or so.
I told her I dont actually need you to run a diagnostics test, I just need you to make notes in the system that I told you of the occasional issue I've experienced. She wasn't having it.
Hopefully other dealers won't be so un accommodating to us out of staters. Doesn't matter were I spent my 85k, it's still keeping them in a job.

She’s either giving you bad information, or you misunderstood the way she conveyed the information.
If your truck is still under warranty, or the warranty for whatever part your concern falls under (powertrain or bumper to bumper) is still in tact, then they would diagnose it as a customer concern under warranty. You will ALWAYS have to sign a form stating that you agree that you might have to pay the diagnostic fees. This is in case they discover that the issue is the result of something you did to cause it, or an aftermarket part caused it, you agree to pay for their time that can’t be billed to FCA warranty. If they find nothing, or can’t replicate it, that’s what they note on the invoice, and you pay nothing. As far as the loaner vehicle goes, that is entirely up to the dealership if they want to offer a loaner as a courtesy for warranty work. Your warranty booklet explicitly states that FCA does not have to provide a loaner/rental vehicle while your truck is in for warranty work.

So basically. Unless they can replicate the cp4 noise, they are going to put notes in the system based solely on there findings or lack there of and not put what the customer has said that they have experienced. Just trying to start a simple paper trail for my cp4 in hopes that will move me up the much needed list of pump replacements. So much for anything being simple.

No, it will state on the ticket something like “customer states that such and such is doing this under these circumstances...”, basically whatever you explain to them. Then they’ll describe what was done for testing, whether or not they could replicate the problem, and what steps were taken to correct the problem.
