Last year my 17 Rebel developed an engine bay squeak but only when cold (below about 40f). I have replace the alternator (x2), the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, tensioner, belt (x2) and it still does it. I finally broke down and took it to the dealership where they proceeded to charge me the $100 deductible and said it was the tensioner. I doubted it, but let them try. Didn't fix it so I took it back again. They then greased the tensioner and say d it was fixed again. I know it's hard to believe, but it's still not fixed. Now, I am moving out of the state this week and don't have time for them to do more. I just want my $100 back at this time since nothing has been fixed.

Your thoughts?

After the 2nd attempt in which they said they greased the tensioner.

They’ll never give the money back. They’re doing as little as possible to try and fix it. I hope that you’re moving to a warmer area so it doesn’t do it anymore.

No matter where you go, there is always something not to like

Here in San Diego, we have earthquakes, for the most part, i don't even feel them
  • 0 earthquakes in the past 24 hours
  • 1 earthquake in the past 7 days
  • 14 earthquakes in the past 30 days
  • 203 earthquakes in the past 365 days

Try spraying a little bit of belt dressing or WD-40 on the belt,if it gets better try replacing the belt

Nice Pix

I likely will join them, or at least join the local EMA for weather spotting. Thanks for the feedback on the pix.

I have already replaced the belt twice. The last time with a gator back belt. No change at all. I have a feeling it is coming from either the fan or the water pump.

Does it change frequency (how many times you hear it over a span of time) with engine RPM?

I would think if its pulley or belt related, it would get faster as the engine spins faster.

If I remove the belt, the goes away so it's definitely a belt driven component, and yes, speed does effect it. With that said, it is not a constant or predictable noise. Like in the videos it comes and goes in frequency and pitch.

Got it...so you've done more troubleshooting than both dealer trips :) you owe yourself $100 lol

Maybe take a mechanics stethoscope (or just a long piece of garden hose, or a long flat blade screwdriver) and start touching points to see if the noise transfers.

Lol, great minds think alike. I have done that (mechanics stethoscope) and couldn't pin point it. Partly because it was getting down into the fan area and didn't feel comfortable that farm in while it was running. That's when I just replaced the tensioner pulley and idler pulley. I did try with the scope when not running and just turning by hand and didn't hear anything abnormal.

If you remove the belt, does the clutch fan not spin?

Sounds like an out-there idea, but is it possible the active grille shutter fins are fluttering and squeaking against their frame/case?

No active shutters (as far as I know), but I believe there is both a clutch fan and electric fan. I was wondering if it was the electric fan squeaking was caused by slight movement caused by air draw from clutch fan. I haven gotten to the point of trying find a way to hold electric fan still yet other than removing the clutch fan which is a pain because of the shroud.

Un plug the e fan see if it stops? or pull the clutch fan off ect the fan will drop out the bottom. Also Your dealer must suck any legit mechanic that cant figure this out needs to go back to school LOL try another dealer or mechanic if you cant pin point it yourself.

Yeah, we move this week so I am going to go to a new dealer in Alabama. My complaint is that I already paid the $100 deductible and now have to pay it again. It's not a lot of money, but it's the principal.

I wouldn't pay unless they fix it maybe go to a regular mechanic instead of a dealer.
