I can’t imagine anything getting to that filter in that ridiculous stock location. Can barely get to it to change the oil. Lol. Glad you got up and running and the motor seems ok.

Highway traveling generates a good bit of bad mojo. It is the old adage ; what ever possibly could go wrong, will go wrong. Once a splintered 2x4 went right through the side wall of a brand new BFG 31" AT on my Ramcharger. Good thing the tire shop I bought the tires from took care of me and covered it under warranty.

Once had a freeze plug come out of a cylinder head and started firing hot coolant everywhere.
That happened about 10:00 at night. I hoofed it up the road to a gas station and called a buddy to come pick me up. I had a freeze plug kit in my garage so I thought I was set. Turns out it took a odd size freeze plug that wasn't in the kit. All I could do was stick the closest size I had in and pack RTV sealant around it and hope it would hold till I made it home. So I did that and waited a hour or so for the RTV to firm up. I added water and left the cap off the rad so it wouldn't build pressure. About a mile from the house it blew again but I wasn't stopping. Made it back home as it pissed the last of the coolant out.

I'll never forget being 100 miles from home and leaving a job site. It was getting late so I had the hammer down, headed out of town towards the interstate. The old '91 Cherokee 6 cyl 5 spd never missed a beat until I hear a loud BANG that sounded like a shot gun. I thought for sure I slung a rod. But thankfully when I pulled over it still running but shaking an missing on a cylinder plus making a horrendous noise. I found #1 Cylinder blew the spark plug out. I couldn't find the spark plug. I was going to have to find a auto parts place before it got too late. This was a small town that rolled the streets up at night. I turned around and headed back into town looking for some place open. No bueno. Everything was closed out. There was a cop sitting in his car so I pulled up and explained my situation. He said there is an Advance Auto on the opposite side of town that was likely still open.
So off I go and I finally found it. The parking lot was empty so I was afraid they were closed but thankfully they were still open. I bought a single spark plus and borrowed a socket set to install it.
I found the insulator of the old plug still in the wire boot. In a few minutes I was back in business and hauled by butt out of town and got back home late.
Since then I've carried a small tool kit in my vehicle. But I've long since changed jobs and stopped doing field work. No break downs since. ;)

Most recent oil change? Busted oil pan? I once had the guys at Jiffy Lube forget to apply wrist pressure to the oil filter, shot oil all over the place on the Honda CR-V (yes, a sad lady car!).
Ahhh, Jiffy Lube. The high school of oil change specialists.

Just keep in mind that u will never know how much damage was done until they take it apart. Your warranty won’t cover this but your comprehensive coverage on your car insurance may. You got hit by something in the road.

I had something like this happen years ago in a Hyundai Santa Fe. Oil plug fell out on the freeway. I noticed it IMMEDIATELY and pulled over / shut down right away. No engine damage. Phew!

Looks like you got lucky as well?

Well I didnt blow. Got some help getting it up where I could get under it, a friend actually drove two hours to get us with a big gooseneck trailer... and my truck wouldnt fit it was to long. I did give us a chance to get the front end in the air to see what went on and I have never seen this before but something had hit the oil filter an knocked a hole it. Right on the front probably a rock. So we haul buggy to Walmart got a filter, wrench and oil... at this point we had nothing to lose. So we replaced the filter filled it with oil and it fired up oil pressure came up and lifters quieted down and the idle smoothed out. With no leaks I let it run a few minutes and decided to give it a try. Hit the highway easy for the first few mole then ramped it on up . It did fine , good oil pressure and oil temp with no sounds. Gonna cross my fingers but it made it 197 miles no issues. Now I am gonna change the oil this week hoping it stays good. With The sounds it made it had to lose some life but not much I can do but monitor it. I think because it never lost all oil pressure before I could safely get off the road and shut it down may have saved it. Thanks for the responses.

Well good luck. Pain in the ass to do that on the side of the road. I'm lucky mines a diesel and way up high.

Dam. Road debris? A co-worker lost his fuel tank because something flew up and punctured it. He had to ditch off the freeway and call the FD because he just filled up his Gen4 Ram.

If you kept the old filter I would cut it open and look for metal flakes/shavings. When it's time for your oil change do the same for the existing filter and inspect it.
Best of luck!

Glad you saved it, You had me worried my 17 is at about the same mileage. Shows me though there is still reason to carry AAA RV Plus which gets me a couple 200 mile free tows a year. even though I'm not driving 15 to 20 year old stuff. You're more than likely good I had a Ford Ranger that I bought thinking it needed a motor as relayed to me by the seller. His story was he and Mechanic buddy had replaced the starter. He was taking the core bac to the auto parts and it blew oil out all over so he drove it home a couple miles & parked it. Mechanic buddy told him the motor was shot so he put it on Craigslist. I bought it and had it flat bedded home (using said AAA). It didn't seem right to me that it would just blow with he miles that were on it (120,000) so I got looking around and discovered they had put the wire to the starter on twisted around enough the after a little vibration it arced a hole in the filter. Put on a new filter & filled it with oil and drove it till I sold it 4 years later.

Years ago, I was driving down the freeway in my '66 Monaco and something flew over the freeway barrier, and I saw it. I don't know what it was, but it bounced off the street and push a good gash in my gas tank. Same thing, I had to pull off the freeway into a K-Mart parking lot, while the tank just emptied itself in the lot. Then I had to pay to get it towed because it ran out of gas.

I figure it may have some life taken out. So I am gonna make it a project. This summer when the truck is paid off I am gonna get a engine from a wreck, tear it down and build it back bullet proof like many have done on this forum. Then smile with the extra ponies and piece of mind with better lifters and no MDS. Gotta make the best of a bad situation!

Meh, as already suggested, I'd just run a Blackstone analysis on a short oil change and then for the next couple of changes. If nothing is abnormal, then you got nothing to worry about. Pretty cheap peace of mind.
