Wish I would have come into this thread sooner. I went through the idea of installing a factory remote start, but the cost was just too steep.
You can install something like an Omega, which uses existing fob, for about $150. I have done this now on 6 vehicles and it takes about 30 mins. For about $150, you get what you need for hardware and a programming cable, which you could use on other installs. This price includes T-harness which makes everything plug n play. So, you could then add remote starts for friends/family at about $120 a pop on average.
In fact, with my RAM, I just went back and for another $50 added in a 2 way range extender. I can now start my truck from 3000 feet away, and it returns a signal to a new fob that lets me know when it is running. I got this due to wanting the truck to be warm after a cold walk back from my hunting blinds.
Last I looked, 12 v Solutions was basically taking a Fortin, Omega or iDataLink, rebadging them and doubling the price.
EDIT - A little more info in case anyone needs it. If you want to do this yourself, I did a quick refresh of my install and here is what you need.
* I used an Omega OL-RS-CH10 -- $109. Uses existing FOB, press lock 3x and it will start. Omega is the same company as idatalink and one other brand as well. They all basically make the same product just under different names.
* OL-LOADER --- programming cable, about $40. You have to flash the remote start module to your vehicle. Ram's are two stage - which means you flash it, plug it into the truck where it learns the key, then you flash it again. Bonus of having this cable is that you can then do installs for friends and family vehicles.
If you want app start -- LINKR-LT2 -- about $109 - looks to be the same as what 12 V solutions is offering. Free for the 1st year, then $40 per year afterwards.
OL-RF-42-SST -- about $70 now. This is what I just added. It increases range to about 3000 feet. For this you actually get a new fob and there are choices.
Like I said, my install ran about 30 mins or less. I have done more than a few of these now and that seems to be about average. I buy most my items from a site called kickyride.com. They ship quick, and are helpful on the phone afterwards if you need them.
