I have looked at so many charts and I get different numbers... I have a 5600 pound travel trailer and maybe in the future getting a 8000-10000 pound trailer... Will the 2500 be enough for my current and future trailer??? I appreciate any thoughts.. thanks

You can run any VIN, usually these are in the internet listing. Payload capacity is truck specific, so you have to look at the door jamb, you could end up with a truck that has half the payload of one that looks identical, it is all about the options. It is better to know exact numbers for your truck and trailer than to just read "I do this (whatever this is) and it is just fine. "

you will find that the dsl will have high towing number but small payload number. my son bought a new Laramie 2500 dsl a cpl. months ago and it only has 2100# cargo cap. he has already added airbags because his trailer has 15-1600# pin wt.

I have a 2021 Bighorn crew cab diesel and my payload is 2244 #. I tow a 7000 # travel trailer/almost 1000# tongue weight with absolutely no issues.
Max towing spec is 20,000# GCWR is 27,980#

Tow capacity won't be your issue with the 2500 diesel, your payload will be. Ballpark you will be maxed out at about a 10,000lb TT. That will get you about 1200-1300lbs tongue weight then add your passengers, anything in the bed, tonneau cover, etc. If you pack light and only have 2 of you in the truck you could probably get closer to 12,000lbs. I towed my step-sons brand new 2021 Grand Design Imagine 3250BH. Dry weight was about 8500lbs. We weighed it on the CAT scales and it was 9300lbs. We had 1100lbs tongue weight and the truck was at 9100lbs. There were 3 of us in the truck (about 700lbs total) and a full tank of fuel. I have the 6.4 so add about 800lbs for the Cummins and I would have been right at about 9900lbs so right at max GVWR for the 2500. I have 2973lbs of payload according to my door sticker so my truck has a 'dry' weight of about 7100lbs so we had an extra 800 or so with passengers, tools, etc.

You should be good with the TT's you mentioned but if you plan to go bigger or plan to go with a 5th wheel I would definitely go with the 3500. 2500 Cummins will be pretty much maxed out with just about any 5tth wheel. Adding airbags will help it feel better but won't raise your capacities

Hope this helps.

Truck empty. The other 2 guys were at the dealer but weighed 420lbs combined so add that to these weights:

For comparison here's my sheet for the diesel version of the 2500. As stated I am just under 10K for the truck. But the truck was loaded big time, in the bed and back seat as well.
Steer axle 4880, drive axle 4920, trailer axle 6880, total 16680

the issue is you can tow a lot but you cant haul a lot if your worried about that go to a 3500 diesel.

When I bought my truck, my salesman at the dealer set me up with Ram support. On the main page for my truck by vin number, it provides all the towing information. Mine is a 2021 2500 Bighorn package, 6.7 Cummins, .373 11.5” axle, 6 speed automatic, 20” rims, crew cab 6’4” bed. Depends on your powertrain if your truck has the same gcwr and gvwr as mine, but this will give you an idea anyway. We tow a 7,000 pound 29’ travel trailer like it’s nothing, get about 11 mpg. 93C0E5FB-4138-413D-9864-364AC1117C27.jpeg
Everything you add to the truck reduces your gvwr and gcwr. Hope this helps!

Also keep in mind a typical class C drivers license maxes out at 26,000# GCWR.
