I am attached.. my husband bought it for me before he died… but I have thought of trading it with gas prices being so insane.
Well lady, you have to keep it then. To be honest, it is a great vehicle and a great year. The correct thing to do when a starter goes it not jump it, but hit it with a hammer, this works a lot. I'd plea to the guys, they have wiggle room sometimes, if not call a shop or two. Sorry I'm not closer, I would do it for the fun of it. good luck with it

I’ll probably just go with the dealer this time… no independents have called me back.

Thank you so much. I would hit it with a hammer if I could find it. I’ll try my best.

First thing is to check local reviews of the dealership your truck is at. Ask your friends for a recommendation for some independent shops near you.

Jane, speak with the service adviser or preferably the service manager. Ask them to work with you on the price. See if they can use an aftermarket starter. Hopefully the ~$900 quote wasn't with a Napa starter (or the likes). As you can tell, I have very little faith with your average dealer service. They're not all bad of course.

Explain the same story you told the forum.

They're sticking it to you for full-boar 'list' pricing. I'm sure they have a lot of wiggle room on the $$. Not your fault they can't get vehicles to sell right now..

Little things that you can do or try to do on your own

please notice that the guy is hitting the starter is using a household hammer, not a big hammer, it only takes a few light taps, like you would use if you were tenderizing meat

Hey guys! I found a place near me who will replace it for $280. They’re sending a wrecker down to the dealership to get it. Fingers crossed! Thank you to everyone for your advice! I really couldn’t afford $900….

The $tealership would have been better off charging you a lot less and getting the work. Or offer up a 2-tiered pricing arrangement (brand new starter, vs rebuilt).

Otherwise the $280 sounds more in line with reality. That's actually a pretty good deal I would say ...assuming they're using a quality rebuilt starter.

Glad you found a good solution.

Clicking is often a bad battery and if it is the original battery, it is at the end of it's life.
Usually though you can jump a bad battery and get it to start unless it is really bad and the jumper cables are poor quality.
The other shop can easily check to make sure it is the starter.

If it is the starter, most aftermarket starters come with a lifetime warranty from the autoparts so make sure you ask about that.

After you are up and running, you can ask around for a good mechanic, though it sounds like you may have found one.

2015 Ram. Is it normal for a starter to go up in 6 years?
Is $895 a normal price to fix it?
I legit almost passed out when the dealership called and gave me the news. I thought it was the battery. Recently widowed and know nothing about my Ram except how to drive it.
Please help.

I would definitely go get a 2nd opinion….

Not a common failure for a non-rust belt 2015, but like anything mechanical, you never know.

Not too surprised on the price. They're probably quoting you for a new genuine mopar starter and ~$150/hr labor. $900 and I'm assuming plus tax, etc is insane IMO.
Especially since even if it was a diesel at most I would go to extreme diesel for less than 300. Dealer is ripping her off. Or its gold plated. For a factory Cummins part they have a brand new starter for 512. Average labor for a 5.7 is 109-139 for starter replacent, and starter is msrp at 150. At mymoparparts.com

I just changed mine as all
I got was a clicking when I tried to start. Before that, you it wouldn’t start at random times. Then last week, would not start at all. l even had a new battery installed and nothing. Switch out my starter today and she fired right up. This starter that went was bought and installed in Jan 2019. Yes, anything is possible lol
My total cost? $210 CAD and a cut on my knuckle.
I have all diesels except for my 1965 produced '66 charger. They sure wanted to gouge her on the starter. Msrp from factory is 150. I hear ya on the cut. Mine is more like 18 minutes and ripping skin off my arms, at 80 my skin is pretty thin. I cheat with a lift in my shop and still **** my 51 year old wife off. Keeps telling me she is going to put a chain on me, to stop me working on cars. I've tried to tell her its just a little blood, not like I'm going to die or something.
