So for the S&B intake crowd, which do you have for the filter, the dry or the oiled??
I bought a dry intake when I got the truck, with the filter 'sock' to help. Replaced the filter with another dry, and getting to miles where filter time again. So was 50/50 on going oiled this time. Wondering what the more common one is amoung the crowd?
I know AFE's dry can be washed, but not S&B.

Depends how you’re using your truck really. An oiled filter gets cleaned and re oiled and the dry is a throw away. I’m curious to know what most opt for as well. I know in PA it’s oiled all the way

I've been running the oiled S&B for a few years now. Seems to do fine even in the dusty Az desert.

Oiled air filters, according to K&N does not allow any filter oil to get onto the MAP or MAF sensor

But i have to wonder if there is a point where there is too much oil on the filter, restricting the flow of air

Yes. Not enough oil and it won't filter like it's supposed to, too much oil and it will hurt air flow. They work, but you need to Goldilocks them.

Oiled for me and I have two filters. I have the oiling/cleaning kit as well. Just clean and oil one when you take it off and throw the other one on. It’s pretty easy to clean and oil as they give you a bottle and directions of how and how much oil to add so you don’t over/under oil the filter. I grabbed a filter bag also for up here in dirt road/trail territory. Never had a problem since buying one in 4 years.

I’ve had the same S&B oiled filter on three different 4G rams, still looks brand new, takes virtually no maintenance and hasn’t thrown a single code pertaining to air temperature sensor or throttle body
Definitely been trouble free

I'm a fan of the washable dry flow filters like AEM. Ever since I got one that had K&N stamped on the end of it, I'm pretty sure they are the same filters and just oiled or not. Last K&N I bought I washed immediately and installed with no oil.

I've always bought dry air filter elements for practical reasons:
- no maintenance required
- cheaper to replace, though have to replace more often

This goes for all my engines. At work, we didn't bother with wet air filter elements on big, high value engines either (Cummins). I know Caterpillar has a cyclonic precleaner that drops heavy dust out of the cartridge prior to being sucked through the filter. I'm not aware of them using a wet filter either.

So, if a $40,000, 80,000 hour engine doesn't use it, I don't see much benefit for a light duty, naturally-aspirated, low pressure engine either.

The thing is with S&B both dry and oil cost the exact same. Just need to buy the oil/cleaner kit with the oiled. I like the ease of dry, just change. But they end up costing way more buying them multiple times. Still in the fence....

I run an oiled filter on my S&B air intake. When I clean it I fill a 5 gallon bucket with water and add a healthy amount of Simple Green tot he bucket. I duct tape my palm sander to the side of the bucket and let it run for an hour. It acts as a sonic cleaner and really gets the dirt out of the filter. Spray it one last time with the filter cleaner that comes in the kit, let it dry overnight, and oil it the next day and put it back on. If I need my truck I just use a paper filter for the day. Typically I do it at the en of the day so I don't need to worry about using a paper filter. Put the paper filter back in the box when you're done and use it again the next time you clean.

The washable filters allow more air to pass through the filter and the oil is to catch the dirt. The paper filters are more restrictive and as they get dirty they get even more restrictive which is why I switched to the S&B with the K&N filter.

this is pretty clever. Nice work.

I run oiled filter.

Cleaning is easy and if you are daily driving on roads, likely will last much longer than a paper filter before needing to wash.

Sounds like for you (OP) there is an upside with going oil (saving money) but not really an upside with going paper.

also need to factor in the cost of the cleaning kit but I believe it's pretty cheap compared to the filters and you get a few cleaning uses out of it.

Stock filter and air box all day long. These boxes will filter best and they allow as much air as these, and any other truck out there, will ever need.

Unless your making a 1000 hp super modded vehicle save your money

If you must have a CAI it would be dry all day..

In my youth I did all the Kand N oil crap on vehicles.. Just made my oil get dirty faster. With new MAF sensors it just aint worth it..

HP gains??? Ha ha ha ha dont make me laugh.. Plus worse gas milege because of a heavy foot just to hear that air sucking sound...

Keep it..

Have you tried a filter pressure gauge to actually see if its different wet or dry? I tried wet and from the get go it was at 6 inches, 10 is really close to time to change it. 4 months later it was at 15, and showing red. A lot of dust here in the desert. Sometimes I can't even see the hills around here for the dust. With a dry I get more time before a change. And it starts at 1.5 inches on the gauge, not 6 like wet. Sure wet gets small dust, but my air hungry beast wants a lot of air.

Interesting, haven’t tried the pressure gauge test
What’s the procedure to check it?
I’m curious to see now how good or bad it is
Is getting time for me to clean and re-oil
Perfect time to do a comparison

You can make one by using a cheap vaccumn gauge, plumb it in behind the filter. Then you just read the inches of vaccumn it pulls. You can buy a dedicated version, but a cheap vaccumn gauge bought from Princess Auto accomplishes the same basic thing
