So I'm at 4" lift, 2WD , 6 cyl with 35x12.5R20's
Love the look, the ride, except RPMs and gas mileage suck now with the 35's
When I'm not towing I'm mostly in 7th gear around 2200rpm around town. It never drops into 8th gear on the transmission

The minute I goto tow even a light load like 1,000 golf cart with a 700lb trailer, on the highway I have to manually shift getting upto speed with letting my foot of the pedal ,wait to shift, then pick up speed again.
I stay in 6th gear at 3000 RPM's until finally I can slow down to let it shift to 7th which gets me to 22RPM

I just spent $1600 on 35's tires
Would it be best to drop to 33x12.5 or regear and what size gears would be needed ?

Thank you!

Who the heck would put a lift and big tires on a 2wd, pentastar V6 powered Ram 1500. A Florida guy..

I'm kiddin' ya! It is a sweet looking truck and I loved my 2017 4x4 w/ pentastar.

That is a lot going on for this powertrain. Like said, a re-gear will help some, but not totally solve it.

I would step down a tire size personally.

Would I be safe running 33's ?
What does a regear cost and will it solve it completely?

The stock tires are 33s so you should get most of your oem driving characteristics back. Won't quite be the same if the new setup is any larger diameter or any heavier though.

Not totally sure what a regear costs on the v6 setup but I'd guess anywhere between $1500- $2000 for the parts and labor.

re gearing will definitely help. I am running 33s with 3.92 but I have the hemi. I would say 33s would be ok.

If you like the current configuration, aside from the newfound doggyness, then just regear. You can legit get it to shift just like it did stock with those 35’s and a regear. But I would venture more into the $2000-3000 range. Guess it depends on your area, though.

Call some 4x4 shops and get estimates, prices can vary. I had mine done but also installed an Eaton tru-trac, all in gears tru-trac ,and install with bearings / seals was right at $1,300.00 in west palm beach

Re-gear on a 2WD shouldn't be too bad since you only need to do one axle. No idea the cost but I'd guess around $1000-1500. But yeah, 35's with a V6 is a bad combo

What's better for gas mileage also?
Re gear or 33's?

Well, really depends on the weight of the tires. Some 35’s will weigh less and have less rolling resistance than some 33’s (like a light 35” AT vs a heavy 33” MT)…all depends on the tire. With a heavier tire and less rolling resistance, you will always loose mpg.

I went with a stock size goodyear ultra terrain on my big horn half ton, and lost a solid 1mpg coming from the stock goodyear street tires. 100% stock other than the tire change.

It's not only weight at each driven corner that is fighting you with the 35s. It's the added leverage. You essentially lowered your gear ratio (numerically) going with bigger tires. So they are harder to get moving and harder to keep moving.

I am one of the few guys here running a true 35in tire on my 3.21 ratio hemi powered ram and I can tell you I would not go any bigger on my setup. Sure it works but, my city driving mpg suffers compared to 3.92 hemi rams. At highway speeds if I drive a bit fast, 80-85 I still get 20+mpg but any lower and my truck doesn't like it. Really weird to think that 70mph is worse mileage but it is. It's kind of lugging at that speed.

Couldn't imagine having a 6cyl and 35s with stock gearing.

I agree with the re gear comments. However if we start with the basics. Did you program in the larger tire size to one fix your speedometer and two change your shift points

If you want to tow with engine rpms around 2K, should have brought diesel. Part of your problem is the 35s but the bigger issue is the torque band of your engine. The 3.6L Pentastar torque peak is 4500 rpms so you can expect to be in that range while trying to accelerate a load. Even the Hemi torque peak of 410ft/lbs is at 4K rpms as compare that to the EcoDiesel which has 480 ft/lbs at 1600 rpms.
Your engine will be just fine with the higher rpms, better than the low speed lugging your doing to the engine now. Turn on the Tow/Haul mode and let the transmission put the rpms where they need to be.
