Electricity portability is still an issue - where you gonna refill your e-juice in Flin Flon Saskatchewan?
The Petro Can there has an EV charger, and with all the oil and gas development around the Provence finding 220+ power outlets is surprisingly easy. Hard to find a parking sport without a 110 outlet, not that you'll get much out of that.

Edit: Petro Can has DC fast charging along highway 1 no more than 155miles apart, but Canadian Tire is still on track to have more locations with EV chargers.

It will take a minimum of 10 years, and probably closer to 20 before electric towing makes sense.
Back when I first started looking at converting my '57 to electric in the 90's my plan was to have a generator I could pop in the bed or on a trailer for towing or long trips. There are several options available to buy for that use now.

Not sure if I'd do that or have batteries in the trailer(or both). Most of the trailers with batteries you can buy today are aimed at small SUVs, but I've seen a few nice home built/mod options. Nothing I'd want to squeeze into most charging spots with either, so I'd probably plan my trip booking sites with decent amperage or where I can run my generator a fair amount to charge the truck.

Dude, go buy the GMC or Ford.

No one here is having a meltdown because we are a few HP down on the competition. You are still missing the point; you have to have efficiency. The SRT motor in the RAM would be terrible for towing. You would be lucky to get 6-8 pulling the full load. But I guess you would get across the finish line first. Actually no, you would be stopping for fuel too much.

And the 6.4 Truck motor would only give you more towing capacity on a truck that already does not have enough payload.

I'm not looking to increase an artificial tow rating, I already told you that. I just want more actual power when towing on onramps and passing a trucker. The 6.4 would give me that, couldn't care less if the tow rating stays 8000 pounds. And yes I actually do have a good payload, 1750 to be exact. No doubt it would go down a little with the extra 6.4's weight.

The reason they don't offer it is marketing and economics.

I already gave you like 50 reasons why it's not economics.

Let's face it, gas motors are done. It'll be electric from here on out as mandated by Cali and the feds. Maybe a hybrid but that's questionable even.

The regulations are going this direction, but reality is going to be a problem. I just looked up a couple numbers.

1.23E11 gallons of gas were used in transportation in the US
at 25 mpg average combined mileage rating for US cars, this is 3.08E12 miles
the average electric car uses 34.6 kWh/100 miles
This would require 1.06E12 kWh of electricity to replace the gas used for transportation.
In 2020, 4.01E12 kWh of electricity was generated in the US

Replacing all ICE vehicles with EV would require at least 26.5% increase in electricity generation in the US. Once that energy is generated, it will need to be delivered, so the power grid would need to be upgraded. Since most vehicles would be charged overnight, I am not sure if it helps or hurts grid capacity, but it will not be enough without upgrades. Add to this, it takes about an hour to recharge the battery in your EV, and you get about 100 miles out of a charge. This results in 4 hours of standing still to charge for every time you stop for gas on a road trip. The technology and the infrastructure do not support this change.

Ok, that's great for that area, but it is not the case here in Minnesota, and I doubt is the case for the majority of the northern hemisphere, is my point. The charger availability map online shows this pretty clearly. That and where does electricity come from on cloudy January days?

It is actually at least from what I could find doing some research. You can only get the 3.5 eco in 4x4 F150s. If they put it in a 2wd the story might be different.

I don't know a whole tom between brands though, I literally jumped on motortrend to type my first response. If I'm incorrect I'll own it 100%
My self wouldn’t ever purchase a 2wd truck. So I wouldnt even consider that.
But there is no way possible the 5.7 is more fuel efficient in any configuration of ford. Real world experience. Not crap posted online

Ram already has a powerful alternative for the RAM 1500's 5.7 Hemi. It is not perfect. But it gets better MPG, has 70 lbs more torque at lower RPM (more useful power in a truck than top end horsepower), and doesn't have electric hybrid generators, MDS or the Hemi tick. It tows about the same weight, a little less than the Hemi with e-torque, a little more than the regular Hemi. . . It is more expensive and there have been some issues about reliability, but there have been reliability issues with the the Hemi. It's called the Gen III 3.0 Ecodiesel.

I've had both engines. I like them both. But both won't be with us in 15 years. They are going to be replaced with gas and/or diesel hybrids with near zero emissions and zero emission electrics. These will have more torque than todays motors and the hybrids will have more range too. The all electric trucks will be mainly around town and fleet work trucks. The hybrid will be our RV and long distance towers. The torque numbers for both is going to be amazing.

Simple gas and diesel engines, as we have known them for 120 years, are ending.

I really hate to say this but I have been looking to get new truck and I have test drove few out there and our hemi IMO come near last only worse engine out there is that stupid GM 5.3 , I have test drove 6.2 from chevy 5.0 from ford 3.5 ford even 2.7 from ford I think is putting a good fight, definitely strong little fu@#er and gets great fuel milage .... our hemi is nice and smooth but is showing his age underpowered and love to drink gas.
Why do people complain about what they drive? If you weren’t already looking?. No matter how many vehicles are manufactured your going’s to find faults in all of them. I have owned different makes of vehicles there is not one any better than my Ram. when I look back the Hemi got awesome gas mileage, so what happened when they put fuel injection on? Why did the mileage and mileage go into the toilet? First off the exhaust is choking the engine, true dual exhaust will increase 5 mpg and power ton of difference. The little things makes a difference.

Prior to ordering my Ram 1500 with the 5.7 I had been a life long Ford guy in terms of domestic vehicles. Never owned any domestic vehicle other than a Ford. When I needed a new 1500 I was nearly certain I would order a F150 with the 5.0 V8. Then I drove the Ford 5.0 and the Ram 5.7. The Ford motor made the decision for me. The Coyote 5.0 was awful compared to the Ram 5.7. The brand new example I drove lacked bottom end torque and needed to be reved hard to make power. When run hard the 5.0 does make similar power to the Ram 5.7. BUT, the 5.0 is so thrashey and harsh, so unpleasant when pushed the only thing I wanted to do is let off the throttle to make it stop. The Ram 5.7 has significantly better low end torque and revs free and smooth throughout the entire rev range compared to the Coyote motor.

This is not to say the F150 is all bad. It's an excellent truck, more capable in many ways than the Ram has arguably the better 10 speed transmission than the 8 speed in the Ram. But none of that could overcome how terrible that Coyote motor is. This is my opinion as someone who was strongly biased toward Ford.

What do you all think ? here is my take on this, I have owned bunch of those hemis over the years and I think the hemi is a good engine but I think Chrysler need to drop it from production the engine is getting old is not that efficient and begin to be underpowered , I would love to see a 4.0 L straight 6 turbo or smaller displacement dual over head cam v8 turbo in our trucks, I dont think this this will happened but I would love to see it in a near future , I think its time, CHRYSLER ARE YOU LISTENING ?
Well they r all going electric soon I hate it. I don’t buy a truck for gas mileage. And I don’t buy one for the electric engine either Don’t like the way this is going but it seems to be going that way

Nothing wrong with the 5.7. My '05 Rumble Bee is down on HP compared to newer 5.7 HEMI engines (about 340), and it gets lousy gas milage with the 5 speed auto/3.9 gears, but it's fun to drive. Besides, look at all of the 5.7's getting swapped into '60's & '70's Mopars...they are more efficient, make great power, and way easier to find than big blocks. The 5.7 HEMI is a great "bread & butter" engine, like the 318 was.

On a YouTube channel I heard the the Hemi V-8 would be gone in 2024. Under pressure from the EPA RAM trucks are going to get more electrified and less gas. Gosh that's sure going to be a great improvement.......NOT. My Ram 1500 gets 20 mpg about 20% of the time and 18mpg the rest.

Maybe we should go get a FORD Eco -Boost. NO WAY, I HATE turbo engines. Beat the tar out of a small engine that costs huge money to repair.

Hope Chrysler is NOT listening! Yep a inline 6 would be nice, not a double cam V8 though, nothing to gain there. Turbo high output 4 would be best option actually when one looks at all venues and strategies. 5.7's are just as they are. cheers

From what I recall they were supposed to replace it by an inline 6 a couple of years

I just bought a new 2021 RAM 1500 Classic with the 5.7 Hemi. This is the first new vehicle I've bought that wasn't a GM product. I couldn't be happier with the way it drives. I spent less for the Hemi than a similar Chevy with a turbo 4 cylinder would have been. It's the most bang for the buck available today. Sure they could add the 6.4 for the guys that want to spend more but leave the 5.7 alone!

I couldn't imagine a 5.7. would seem better in a midsize.
With my 6.4 warranty issue I'm having and the crummy network. This ram hasn't impressed and will be short lived in my life of trucks I've owned, all other brands which have been extremely reliable and with incredible dealer support from the manufacturer. I don't think it matters what engine. It's the remnant of Dodge Chrysler. 3rd for ever.

Just wondering if anyone here has the 5.7 with etorque. I have the standard 5.7 in my 2019 Ram and I have no issues with it. I pull a 34' Rock Wood Travel trailer with it and it does an excellent job. I understand that the etorque adds extra hp and torture when needed like when pulling a load. I haven't heard much about this system from actual truck owners that have it, does it actually help with pulling a load?

There's lots of information out there if you want to learn more about the system. But in my opinion it's mostly marketing fluff. The wife and I actually own both right now. Her Limited is non-etorque, and mine has etorque. I honestly couldn't tell you which one I'm driving if I didn't know (with stop/start disabled on mine). Many people complain about the regenerative braking of the etorque, but I don't notice that on mine. Having said that, neither of us use our trucks for towing. So I can't speak to that aspect of ownership. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay extra for it, because it doesn't seem to do much from my point of view other than shut down the engine when I stop.
