Can I leave the truck running and take the key into the store?

Just got my 2017 ram 1500 sport night edition. It has remote start built in and push button start but thats not exactly what Im going to be asking about. Im wondering if the truck computers will "allow" me to leave the truck running when I get someplace and bring the key with me and lock the truck. Asking so that when I bring my dog with me I would be able to leave him in the truck with the truck running and AC going but lock the doors. In my 07 4Runner the doors would not lock if the key fob was outside the car but the key was in the ignition?

You will need two fobs to make that work. Lock one in the car, take the other with you. Other choice, you can lock your single fob in the car, with all the other doors locked, if you push the silver lock knob down manually and close the door it will lock. Other choice, hit the lock button and close the door three times to bypass the safety. If you do the last two, make sure to have the emergency key in your pocket or you can't get back in. Issue with all of these is if someone pops the side window they can drive off with the truck and the dog.

Locking a FOB in the pikup keeps the vehicle from dinging every few seconds while it is running. If you leave the truck running, get out and lock the doors it will ding the whole time.

I don't have push button start. But with same situation with my dog, I leave truck running and take my physical door key, shut the door, lock the door with the key when outside my truck. Door stays locked. Of course I had already locked other 3 doors. And yes I try to keep time away to a minimum because I do worry about thieves. Not so much the truck, but for my dog!

Awesome to know! Yeah this wouldnt be a very common thing- more like when Im out running dog friendly errands and stop someplace like chipotle for food where my buddy can't come in with me. But good to know there are ways to do it when I need to!

The alternative is to shut off the engine and then use remote start to allow the truck to run while in the store. That way, the pup gets AC and in the instance that someone does enter your truck and the dog fails to annihilate him, it will not move until you go through standard RS activation. This will allow the truck to run for about 15 minutes if necessary.

YES. Go outside and verify. On MY 19:

1. Start Truck.
2. Enter truck, lock all doors.
3. Key fob in pocket, get out push down lock button, close door.
4. Wala, all done. MY truck shows in EVIC (Key Fob Left Vehicle Warning).
5. I do not know if there is any type of security built in to turn off truck after a period of time. But w/o FOB in vehicle, If U get in, U can put in gear and move the vehicle. (I tried this just now, w/o FOB near vehicle and able to enter with emergency key, put truck in gear and move).

THAT BE THE CAVEAT.

SEE POST #6: Best alternative, and vehicle will not go in gear till (FOB recognized)

Don't take this the wrong way.....but how about simply parking the truck in a lot, leave it running, and get out with the key fob in your hand and see what happens when you try to lock the doors and walk away? After locking the doors with the fob (or at least pushing the lock button) set the key fob down away from the truck and walk back over to it and see if the doors are locked. If the fob won't lock the doors try hitting the manual lock and close the doors. Again, not trying to bash the OP by any means but I don't understand why people can't take 5 minutes to see what happens in real life but will go spend hours on the internet asking random people a question like this. My '16 doesn't have push button start but we have two other brands of vehicles in the household with that option so might just try this out tonight to see what happens.
Just using the remote start option is the simple solution with the only downside it will only last 15 minutes unless you re-start it. Though I wonder if you could change the timer in AlphaOBD to run longer (and not, I don't have AlphaOBD or I would go in an try it).

Better yet, read your owners manual. What I laid out in my earlier post is actually right in the owners manual. I spent about 10 minutes fooling around to verify exactly how they work, but it is pretty easy to do.

You can leave the truck running and take the key fob. Use the keyless entry button on the door handle to lock the truck while it's running. Or the button on the interior door panel.

Without the key fob in the vehicle it will keep chiming until the fob is back in the vehicle.

I know it works because when I first bought my truck I grabbed the keys and locked the door like normal without pressing the button to shut it off as that was new to me. Went golfing and when I came back 5 or so hours later the truck was running.

On my Pacifica I can take the fob out and lock it. I can't remember whether I have to push the door lock (maybe twice) After getting out of the seat OR if I just push the lock button the fob after closing the door.

Now that you guys mention it, I did lock the new truck once at the restaurant and accidentally left it running with the Fob in my pocket but I wasn't far from the truck. I just assumed it could still read the Fob. I will have to try doing that and moving farther away from the truck.

I suggest we try to stick to the question asked, rather than dive down the hole of all the Nanny Laws there are these days. I get so friggin tired of other people trying to tell me what to do, I mostl;y ignore them. When I was young, the owners manual told you how to set the carb and valves, gap the plugs and align the wheels. Now the owner's manual tells you not to drink the contents of the Battery - that is NOT progress.

Well... I can actually answer this. Both my 2014 WK2 Summit and my 2020 RAM 3500 do the following: while running from the push to start, (not remote start, these have about a 10 to 15 minute timer) take the keys, get out, close the door, lock, walk away. The truck is still running.

And will continue to run. At least until the fuel safety level. And then it remains locked. If you lock it. (I recommend to do so). However, note that there is a chimmer that goes off constantly the moment you step out with the key. So don't do this with people in the car.

I do this all the time currently. Especially after a cold start and I stop by the gas station to pick up a drink. I don't want to just shut it off to restart again.

If you have a physical key and remote entry (which typically are not paired together) you will not want to do this because if a key is inside the vehicle, you can press the button on the exterior to unlock.
