I would think if driving conditions are bad enough to need 4 wheel drive, that should be self explanatory. Anytime you are able to drive hwy speeds you should be in 2 wheel drive. Winter conditions in Canada certainly don't allow you to drive any faster than appropriate....4 wheel or not.

I had more difficulty with the RAM in 4H. I slid around at highway speeds because the back end is light. My old Expedition was the complete opposite. I could go through anything because of the weight was more balanced.

I agree 110%. I se that all the time here in Maine. On Icy snow covered roads I get passed by people doing 70 /80 mph :O and have seen them in the ditch later :O , Drive for the conditions and get there in one piece :)
Maybe that was me that drove by you.

Nothing more gratifying than being tailed by a douche in bad winter weather in his truck going way over speed limit then passing him by later on and he's in the ditch! :D

My owner manual for driving in 4WD recommends to do it in slippery conditions.

WHAT IT SAYS:

The 4WD LOCK and 4WD LOW positions are
designed for loose, slippery road surfaces only.
Driving in the 4WD LOCK and 4WD LOW positions
on dry, hard surfaced roads may cause
increased tire wear and damage to the driveline
components.

This isn’t rocket surgery. Drive to the conditions/your ability. My ability level may be higher than most less than a few. When those few come up on me and want to pass I let them by and don’t hope they crash, such a weird mentality to hope the guy with better skills and a set up vehicle that passes you to crash.
I have dedicated snow tires, heavy fiberglass canopy with sand bags also over the rear axle. My truck sticks to snowy ice covered roads super well. Plus I’ve taken winter driving courses and lived in snow climates my entire life as well as chase storms for skiing so I will drive in any conditions.
Don’t be a speed natzi and try to slow those of us who have a higher skill set, just move over and go about your day. Plus I want the faster guy ahead of me to get the speeding ticket……lol

going high rate of speeds on snow/ice/mud etc , whether in 4wd or not ,is stupid and down right foolish. best case, you go in the ditch and only hurt yourself. worst case , you go in oncoming cars and hurt some law abiding hard working person just trying to get home.
when you shift to 4hi at high speeds the electro clutch engages the tcase chain, front driveshaft and ring/pinion and goes from zero to what ever speed your doing , in a instant. over time im sure its hard on parts. open the owners manual sometime and get learned up. i think it says 55mph top engagement speed. yes im sure it will engage at higher speeds but thats alot of mass to go from 0mph to 70mph instantly.
now if you engage it at 55mph or below, and just want to know how much faster you can go before the tcase explodes, aparently grandmesa says your fine atleast 80mph
I'll remember that to go slow when I run the baja 1,000 again. But then I would lose for sure. I don't mind coming in the middle of the pack, and I could care less if I break something or someone. Cops never bothered me in the dirt.

Used to work with a guy that said that 4WD just gets you further into the woods when you go off the road.

What is critical to remember is all of us have 4 wheel brakes, you are no better off when trying to stop with 4WD. Stopping is a great equalizer.

I've seen many vehicles in the ditches and on their tops in the mountains of Colorado with the idiots thinking their 4 X 4's were invincible. I hope the only ones killed are the drivers of these vehicles. It's these idiots that cause the massive traffic jams on our roads after their crashes.

4wd speeds and towing weights really have some passionate arguments with people.

For both reasons is why I rarely travel highways any more

I take my time on the back roads. And if I see someone in a ditch or with a blown out tire, as long as the situation looks legit..I still offer to lend a hand.

I have had more issues with slippery conditions under the speed limit than I ever had over it.

It is just like deer. Everyone flies down the road at night...hit a deer for the first time...or people with AWD that have never slid...the first time...it usually affects their judgement pretty soon after.

The best thing I learned growing older...no need to be in a hurry.
