I got a Trinity EX for Christmas for my '13 Ram 1500. My truck is lifted w/ 37's, 3:55 gears, has a CAI, Magnaflow muffler and recently installed AFE shorty headers and 6 speed trans. Honestly, I don't know much about about these tuners and before I install it, figured my best bet was to check in here and get some recommendations. There's pre-loaded tunes with it, but am I better off with a custom tune? With the current price of gas, I probably don't want to run a 93 octane tune or anything. Any info is greatly appreciated!!

Congrats on the cool gift.

The "canned tunes" that come with the programmer are decent but nothing to write home about. But they do offer some improvement.

I'd suggest you check the box and see if you have the Trinity 2 EX (SKU 9300 or the Trinity 2 EX Platinum (SKU 9345-D). If it is the Trinity 2 EX 9300 you won't be able to load custom tunes. However, there are quite a few settings you can optimize.

If it is the Platinum model then custom tunes can be loaded and it will hold several tunes. I had a custom tune done for my 2014 Ram 2500 6.1L Big Horn and that tune really woke up the truck. So check the box and see what SKU you received.

For now you can load the canned tunes, change your gearing and adjust for tire size right off the bat. From there you can adjust other settings as you learn more about the programmer.

You don't need an unlocked PCM for a 2013 truck so you're good to go from that aspect.

First things first... Plug that programmer into your computer, go to Diablosport's website and update the programmer before you do anything else.

Thanks for the quick response! And, I just checked, I have the Platinum model....so I can do custom tunes.

That's awesome. Custom tunes are the way to go, IMHO.

I've custom tuned 3 of my Hemi powered vehicles and I've always felt it was worth the expense.

Cool! I had a feeling that would be worth it! Just curious....what does a custom tune cost?

With 6sp and 3.55 rear end, I'd suggest transmission tune. Enable 3rd and change shift point would help quite bit. I have locked shifts Transmission tune (HP tuners) with 3rd gear enabled and it drives like a different truck. I was pleasantly surprised. Cost me $400 a year ago.

When you put 37's on a 3.55 gear that brings you down to 3.03
3.03 with 65rfe trans is weak.......looks cool but won't launch
Will also kill that trans a lot faster & pull gas mileage down.

Don't want to disappoint you but its the facts.
Good news a custom tune will help trans & add power around 3500 rpm & up.

I've had the truck since new with 37's and know all about the different gear ratios. Right now, I have a pedal commander.....and I'm not disappointed with my truck. At all. And, I'm sure it can get better with a tune.

Well I also had 3.55 gears with the 65rfe on 35's with a custom tune & pedal commander.........added 3k stall helped.........4.56 gear made a huge difference.......cam & headers improved even more

I'm sure those other changes improved everything on your truck. For me, my truck is enjoyable to drive and never feels sluggish. And if I can gain a little more with this tuner, that's great. Though, I'm not trying to race it. I have another car in the garage with long tube headers, cam and professionally dyno-tuned at 525 HP for that.

Didn't quote you......if I grow any older I'll be dead.....Ram's are known for performance.....why degrade.....what does holding 6th gear have anything to do with racing.......I will tell you why it downshifts......incorrect gear because of taller tires

Knowledge is great......it prepares you for striving for the best & the ignorant.
Block away..........LoL

I thought the same thing when I read his initial post, 6 speed trans, 3.55s and 37" tires are recipe for a burned transmission, especially if he does any real work with it. I would have addressed the gears first before thinking about custom tuners, but that's just me. To each their own, if he's happy with it that's all that matters. If the trans goes south I would suspect that combo as a contributor.
