Captured some stills from an Instagram video. Scary but perhaps a good reminder to do things right. I tow a 5W so not an expert on TT’s but severe fishtailing like this is due to WDH issues and overloaded to the back??

With the windmills in the distance, gusts could be culprit also.
Over the last week we had 100 to 75mph gusts and they are quite regular here

Is that an F250? It should have no problem controlling that sized trailer. He may not have had a WDH (or used it correctly), or he might have had a blowout, or he might have loaded that trailer too much in the rear. Number of possibilites, but I'm surprised he did that with a 3/4 ton.

WHITE Knuckle driving at it's best. A lil slide, swing, over correct, and U R done.

The wind turbines don't create any wind. They respond to it.

The laws of physics still apply to 3/4-1 tons trucks, with it attached to the bumper it has leverage on it side. Your barking up the right tree about something wasn't set up correctly.
Would applying the trailer brakes as soon as it started swaying possibly prevented that?
Manually applying just the trailer brakes can help get the trailer back under control. Unless your going to hit something in front of you don't brake the truck.
Then find a CAT scale and check the weight loading and WDH set up.

Wow.......

The very few times I had trailer sway applying just the trailer brakes did help straighten it out but the best thing to do in high crosswinds is to get off the road at the nearest opportunity.

If i am not mistaken, that truck & trailer is traveling West on Interstate 8, just before a little desert town of Ocotillo Wells, California

Most times the wind picks up just after that dip in the road, it gets up to about 40 mph.

I take 12x60 mobile homes through there quite often & we have to watch the wind

That stretch of road is also very rough, earthquakes have shifted the asphalt over the years, so it has high & low spots, sort of looks like cracks

The Speed limit is 70 mph for 2 & 3 axle vehicles, but for towed vehicles, it is 55 MPH, but no one obeys it

There is the one travel trailer up on the overpass that looks to be tracking straight. I would not be at all surprised to find way to much weight in the toy box area. Physics will bite you in the butt every chance it gets, and if there was wind it just gave the problem the first chance to finally appear.

Shure would have helped. Use it many times just as a preventative when towing and semis pass. A little stretch braking will save something like that from happening in almost all cases.

I looked closer at the trailer, it looks like it may be a Toy Hauler
About 60 to 70 miles in back to the East of them, there are the SAND Dunes
The well known rowdy Glamis Dunes & the more family friendly Imperial Dunes at Gordons Well & Greys Well & several other smaller areas

Super Duty and a Toy Hauler is what it looks like. Hard to say what the contributing factors are there. Could be anything. Hope everyone is okay.

Wish I could have posted the whole video. Don’t think anyone was hurt physically, truck ended up upright but the trailer shell broke loose from its frame. Mainly posted it as a heads up for newbies to read all the good advice on here and for experienced folks to not be complacent. Everybody stay safe!

Found the site it was posted on
12 second video

Now i think that weight distribution & speed were major contributors

Created Oct 27, 2015
so the dunes would have been open for recreation

( The dunes are closed from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend because of Extreme Heat )
