And yet we have people thinking it's fine to tow that with a 1500 when a 2500 couldn't handle it.

1st you cant fix stupid. From the video clip it looks as if wind was not a factor as the dust is not moving of the road at a high rate. I'd like to see just a few seconds before the start of the video as it almost looks to me that they tracked off or out of the lane and on to the shoulder and then over corrected. Most likely either over loaded, ie. to much tongue weight or improperly balanced load.

Actually, this just points out 2500's are not invulnerable. It won't save you from inexperience, lack of maintenance, going too fast for conditions, undersized/improperly set-up/or lack of sway control, or insufficient weight distribution (inside trailer.) Seeing this wipeout on a 2500 makes me feel better towing with my truck. Although mine's not a toy hauler, it's probably as big as that trailer. I have no sway.

Just another reason to go with 5th wheels and goosenecks. Takes the worry away. I have seen some crazy long travel trailers and I cringe as to what they must be like towing in a less than ideal situation.

Wow.......

Would applying the trailer brakes as soon as it started swaying possibly prevented that?
Yes applying the trailer brakes would have straightened it right out.
Chances are this trailer was heavily loaded in the back. It was a toy hauler trailer. Probably Stuck 1 to many buddy’s quads in the back. And the whole trip turned to ****.

I think a lot of these campers are city guys that are not use to anything larger than a car. I know a couple that retired, Bought a 35 ft 5th wheel, and a one ton. fist time he ever drove a truck was when they headed south. He could not back that thing up, had to find someone to park it . He made it somehow????????? I have seen semi trailers wagging in the winds around here, I never, ever drive beside one.

He should have headed the advice of:
biggertruck.jpg

If there's an idiot behind the wheel, they'd wreck any truck while towing that trailer.

I think that the reference to wind turbines was an indication of a high wind area, not that the turbines create the wind. I’ve driven through there many times with a 35’ fifth wheel, saw the tires on one side come off the road enough to see daylight once and I was only doing about 35 mph while the idiots were passing me at 70+

As someone said, can't cure stupid. Many trailer jockeys don't know that the speed limit for 3 or more axles is 55. This driver apparently was not used to a trailer. He probably was trying to keep up with the speeding cars. Hitting the trailer brakes as soon as it started to sway would have saved them. And of course weight was probably a factor. They probably don't understand that loading the back of the trailer decreases the tongue weight that you need!.

It must have been a very hot day to have all those wind turbines going strong to cool off the valley. Would create a huge Venturi effect on the slight upslope there at the wipeout scene. ;)

Last summer at a military campground a guy and his family were towing and his 1500 was absolutely maxed out on squat. He asked me to back his trailer in since he always tried to get pull thru spots. It was a straight shot backwards, didn’t even have to really cut the wheels. I worried about him for a while and hoped they got home safely. Maxed out truck and didn’t know how to park his rig :(

I'm thinking this is that guy's first rodeo when things start to get crazy behind you.
Inexperienced driver in this situation is my vote.
Sure, something causes everything but it's how you react to it. This driver had his hands full and no clue from there on.

Trailer weight distribution is critical. Tail heavy will create such a scenario. I don't mean 1K tail heavy either. Tail wag is no joke. Judicious application of trailer brakes and heavy application the loud pedal at the same time, will help quite a bit. Once it is under control, if it gets under control, get off the roadway and redistribute the trailer weight.

Video shows weight distribution and issues doing it wrong.

Why did you have to go there? That was a 2500 and it got blasted. I see way more 2500 guys over loading than 1500s. They think the 2500 is just like a 3500. No it is not.

That was my point. Loading a 1500 like a 2500 and a 2500 like a 3500. Not singling out a certain truck, just that people are always overloading them thinking they will be fine. That particular truck may not have been overloaded (and doesn't look like it was) just improperly loaded.

^^ there are people that drive under the influence and arrive home safe everytime. Still not recommended, nor should it be encouraged.

I'd love to see some scale measurements on that rig above and pic of your door jamb.

That window is really nice, and I like that the slide out(s) are not on the door side. I assume a rear kitchen? We had that in our last 5th wheel and it was perfect. And lastly, no goofy (to me) outdoor kitchen under the bunk that I would never use and just wish for storage space instead. That almost looks like a third axle would fit nicely there, but how does it tow overall?
