I bought a 2019 3500 with a 6.7 HO. I bought it to tow our 38" fifth wheel RV once it comes in. 15500 GVWR. I don't have a ****** yet and this is my main mode of transportation right now. I noticed it may have had a tune in it because the exhaust brake does not shut off with the truck and the DEF gauge has read 100% since I bought it almost two months ago. There are no deletes that I can tell.

Since buying the truck I learned some things I was doing wrong. I warm the truck up every morning before driving to work (about 10 minutes idle time). I did this year round with my gas vehicles as to bring everything up to temp so condensation doesn't kill the exhaust system. I only have about 3-4 miles to drive to catch my rideshare. I drive home cold form the lot where they drop me off. Other than that its mostly around town driving with only occasional highway.

Last Friday I got the "Exhaust filter almost full drive at a consistent speed" warning. I came to this forum and learned what that was and, on Sunday morning, I took to the interstate. After a steady 70 MPH (about 2100 RPM) it took 26 miles then the message disappeared and my information center returned. I figured the regen was complete (I cannot find any gauge for this), and I reversed direction on the interstate and drove home.

Monday everything seemed normal. Tuesday evening, while driving home, the warning message was back. I didn't use the truck today and decided I will skip the rideshare tomorrow and drive the truck to work (44 miles of interstate each way) to clean the DPF again. Maybe even use tow/haul and keep it out of OD.

I took the truck out to fuel it up for tomorrow and, on the way back from the gas station, I got the "Exhaust filter full, reduced power, see dealer" message. I don't see any manual regen button or software option in the info center.

My questions now are; can I force a regen, either manually or by driving...or is this "see dealer" message the kiss of death leaving me no option but going to the dealer? Can I buy a scanner/device to allow me to do this myself? I am familiar with using tuners from when I had my 2010 Camaro SS.
I am afraid the dealer will want to charge me $3K to replace the filter and then rag on me for the ECU tune and charge me to put it back to stock. The truck has 119K miles so all warranties are gone.

Sorry this was so long but I wanted to give you as much info that may be pertinent. I will hold off for a couple days before taking it to the dealer in the hopes you guys and gals can help me out. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

There is a option to force a regen using AlfaOBD, I don't recall reading about anyone reporting using it on the Cummins.

I saw the AlfaOBD mentioned in here but have not looked into one yet. I'll do that today.

The edge tuners have manual regen capability. You may want the dealer to flash it back to stock to ensure everything is working the way it should. If there is a phantom tune you don’t know what it is or what it’s disabling. It’s clearly not a delete tune because all exhaust filter monitors would be disabled.

I bought the truck locally and yesterday I actually learned the original owner and I have a mutual friend. He knew the truck's history and I asked him, to ask the original owner, if he could tell me what tune is in it and if he still had the factory tune for it. I am supposed to talk with him today at work. If nothing transpires, taking it back for a reflash was my next step. Just so I could understand where my baseline is. Thanks for the info on the edge tuner!

Your duty cycle is the worst case scenario for face plugging the DPF, regardless of tune. Idle time and short trips are trouble.

Yep...learned that the hard way. My last diesel was a 2002 and I didn't have to worry about this stuff. I did speak to my local dealer and hopefully they can force a regen and get me straightened out. I am going to have them reflash back to the stock program. Going forward, I will be changing my driving habits for sure.

Since I wasn't going to drive it further, I dropped it off at the dealer yesterday and they are going to fit me in when there's an opening. I told them to reflash the ECU back to stock and they will need to force a regen.

For those following, the dealer was able to reflash the ECU back to stock. Unfortunately, the DPF was toast and needed replacing. From what I can find the average life expectancy is about 100K miles. This one has 119K so I guess it was due...$3100.00 later, total with the reflash.

Going forward, what do those, who have only a short "daily" drive every day, do to keep the DPF from getting sooted up? Keep it in Tow/Haul mode around town to keep it out of OD? Limit the gear to keep it at a certain RPM. If so, what is that RPM? I am curious as to everyone's thoughts. I have been keeping the exhaust brake on, in auto mode, while driving around. Is this a problem? Thanks in advance for all inputs!

Sorry for you I just found this thread. Get AlphaOBD app and bluetooth OBDII adapter. With it you'll be able to do a maintenance forced regen. Once started the truck will take around 20 minutes depending on the soot level. It will generate alot of heat and needs to be in an open area away from your home.
As for your commute of 3 miles, you will absolutely have issues constantly. The scenario you're in is the worse case and sure way to plug the DPF again. You need a beat'er car or a bike.

I'm leaning toward, and currently looking for, a beat'er. Can you recommend an OBDII Adapter and App.? There are several to choose from and I am not sure if it matters which one I choose for my 2019. Thanks!

Website link click
The app is on googleplay : ALPHAOBD
I use a generic ELM327 OBDII bluetooth adapter from Amazon. They recommend OBDLink .
You'll also need a Security Bypass Cable.
Also search the forum for ALPHAOBD and you'll find all kinds of info. Same on youtube search.

Just a warning. You're about to read probably until your eyes burn. Take breaks, and ask questions. Check out some YouTube vids in between so you're more familiar.
Enjoy.
I'm beginning to see what you mean, lol.

I wouldn’t force the regen. Had an 2016 CTD melt all the sensors in the area and almost caught on fire. Take it to the dealer, more than likely you need a new filter. It started a count down and warned of reduced speed of 5mph before this occurred.

In the final analysis that is what I done. 119K miles and this DPF was done. $3500.00 installed including the ECU refresh back to stock. Drove it home and it threw a code for the DEF system. Drove it back and turns out the DEF injector was crystallized shut from being turned off so long. Another $470.00 installed. They reprogrammed the ECU a second time and it runs, and sounds, like a new truck! Info center showing messages that it never did before, I hear relays and solenoids working now that we're silent until now. I am guessing all is back to where it needs to be.

I would have gone the cheaper route an just deleted the EGR DPF an DEF, it's all nonsense that Costs you tons of money to diagnose and repair cause you don't know exactly which piece is on the fritz.....

Jason, just found this thread. Now that your truck is all fixed, I wouldn’t get a ****** for daily use, I would enjoy my truck. Once a week take that nice drive on weekends so the exhaust filter can do its regen. For me, I’d find some restaurants an hour or so away and go out and get a bite to with wifey.
