i have owned many models and makes of trucks, cars and motorcycles over the years. i recently did my first oil change on 2021 ram rebel with the hemi 5.7L engine. My truck is four wheel drive. Never in all my experience have i seen such a ************* design by engineers when it comes to oil drain and filter replacement. What morons designed this setup? when you pull the drain plug oil shoots everywhere thanks to a torsion bar being right in line with the oil drain plug. I already knew by looking it would be an issue and setup a flow diverter to keep the mess from going everywhere but no, oil shot out and went everwhere but in the drain pan for the initial flow.
And the filter just dam, the front axle for the 4wd is right under the oil filter. There is no way to remove the filter without all its contents dumping right on the front axle and four wheel drive actuator. Such a **** poor design.
My last truck was a toyota tundra that was well laid out for self service. The more i mess with this truck the more i hate the peace of ****
yes it reminds me of my 94 Z71- very **** poor design. im a 2wd so drain is not bad but the filter over the electric steering come on! I absolutely love this truck and in my opinion EVERTHING was well thought out (i have never owned a truck that i dont want to change anything on) except for this lol but most people are morons and they dont change thier own oil anyway.

Quick fix on the filter, zip lock bags are still messy. Found this pin Amazon
Motivx Tools Oil Filter Plug Cap... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VZ1LD8Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Neat idea but that isn't going to help on the 5.7. The issue is as soon as you loosen the filter it starts dripping oil onto the cross member. You need to direct that oil away from there. By the time you get the filter off far enough to put this plug on the mess already happened.

You want bad engineering? Try a late model Ford Escape. No engineer designed that vehicle without a bean counter messing it up. Oil drain plug discharges directly on a crossmember. Front transfer case (not what Ford calls it) only has a fill port on top so fluid needs to be pumped out and the supposed lifetime fluid is 3/4 of a quart of 20W50 Mobil 1 that cooks less than 4 inches away from a turbo without a heat shield. The rear diff drain port is not accessible unless you lower the rear axle and heaven forbid if you need to replace the evap canister at some point because the actual work manual states to pull the entire rear axle and crossmember for access. Transmission fluid change requires the removal of the entire driver side fender liner and wheel along with a fill procedure that rivals the ZF 8 speed. Coolant change requires unbolting the radiator for access to the drain plug. I can go on…..

No argument it is a very poor design. If you take and cut a washer fluid jug properly you can retain the handle to position it and put it under the filter to catch the oil and the filter. Keeps the oil from getting all over the axle.

This is a commercial version called Pig Form a Funnel. The washer jug is free, just cut length wise, contains all the oil

I cut a Rain X windshield washer fluid bottle in half to catch the oil from the oil filter from my 5.7L Hemi. I loosen the oil filter with my oil filter wrench, slide the half bottle under the oil filter, tip it down, loosen the oil filter until oil runs out, then leave it alone for a while to stop draining, then remove the old oil filter with the half bottle.

Our '83 Pontiac Bonneville. Had to remove the right front tire and wheel to get at the filter, and that was still unpleasant.

Just get a lift kit. Problem solved.

Or, easier still, take it to the dealer for oil changes. The prices (at least around my area) are really competitive and there's no questions regarding the warranty and as a bonus, the service info is automatically stored in Mopar's "My Garage." Problem solved as well.

BBFE8EDC-C871-42B2-8E84-808E33E75BD6.jpegIt’s not that bad. Put the large ziplock baggie around underneath it and twist slowly, some oil will dribble into the baggie. Unscrew it the rest of the way but don’t take it off. When you remove it from the threads have the baggie ready as a big glub of oil will come out. If you drop the filter or the baggie you will have a mess. The oil will run over the side of the tray. The tray works well with drips, not the large dollop. Have brake cleaner at the ready.

So, what else is there going on with it in order for you to call it a POS only after having troubles with your oil changes?

Look, I know its a pain in the ass, it has been at least as far back as 2008 which was my last truck but maybe you just need to get you an oil filter relocation kit and a Fumito valve or something alike for your drain valve. Me, I just got a small Tupperware bowl from Walmart that I trimmed down to about 2 and a half inches tall that works perfect for catching the oil from the stock oil filter's location and having a set of ramps really helps.

But hey, if oil changes are gonna anger ya that much then maybe you oughta sell that thing and get something else.

Can always buy a oil filter relocation kit from Mr. Gasket or Earls and move it someplace else.. even get a dual filter setup if so inclined...

Mr G is a generic setup, where Earl's is designed specifially for the 5.7..

New to modding my vehicles, why would you want a dual filter setup? I understand the relocation, but doubling the filter media I don't get. My brain is saying that the added media won't help a lot, unless you have some crap in the engine you are trying to remove, other than maybe allowing more flow by doubling the surface area.

I see zero positives here.

I think he was just merely suggesting that if that’s something you wanted but in my opinion, unless you’re driving in some really dusty dirty conditions that just a simple one filter oil filter relocation kit will be all you need.

The only positive I see; and the only reason why I would even see that as a positive is because if you’ve got a long warranty on your vehicle, that could possibly help in the long run depending on how much of a ******* your dealer wants to be if something were to happen and they frowned upon you doing your own oil changes.
