I am going to buy a 2022 Ram 3500 4x4 Dually to tow a 41’ 5th wheel! The 5th wheel has a GVWR of 16,800 lbs & Hitch weight of 4600 lbs!. I would like to know what packages I should get to get a 5400 lb payload rating?? I will get the 8’ bed and will get my on 5th wheel hitch mounted. I would like to get the Limited package for comfort features BUT I have to have a payload of 5400 lbs. so any help as to how to spec the truck would be greatly helpful. Whenever you build one and look at other similar trucks they all have different payload amounts, & that is very confusing§!!
Thanks in advance for any advice

My pl is right at 5400 and I tow a 48'4" 27k fiver. 2020 3500 ho hd aisin 410, air ride. Do NOT add any extras like tool box, auxiliary tank, tonnue cover etc. The Laramie and limited will get you all the technology just don't extra accessorize it after the fact and you'll stay within specs.
Also most fivers my size are around 6000 pin but I've got mine down to 5200. Pay extra attention to how you load the fiver. Put all the light stuff up front in the pass through and all your heavy tools toward the middle - back inside or out. If you have to have to a genny save your money on the Onan and get a portable and put it and your battery bank toward the back. Strategic planning is key. If you can have your rv manufacturer move some things toward the back like i did ( fresh tanks, batteries, grey tanks) then that will also be a big help

When you add the hitch and stuff it won’t be. I read somewhere where the hitch, if factory optioned, is included in the trucks weight, payload number is smaller, but that weight is already included. In a lesser trim level, the hitch weight is not included unless factory equipped. Something to consider. I suspect All options are the same if factory installed. 14k minus truck weight is the true payload.

Im NOT 100% sure that you can get the max tow pkg without getting the 410 gear. Only With the max tow pkg do you get the larger brakes, was what i was told by Chrysler engineer.
Plus a higher fuel bill for you but if your gonna tow big weight then you really don't worry about the fuel bill.

Once you go dually I recommend just jumping to 4500. Mostly because it has a wider front axle and way tighter turning radius

My 2022 Big Horn 3500DRW/ Crew Cab Long Bed CTD/HO/Aisin 4.10 has a payload of 4847lbs. That's with the 5th wheel prep, hitch, steps, spray in bed liner, 50 gallon fuel tank and all other options as installed at the factory. As you can see all of these eat into the payload quickly. I have a 17K (when fully loaded) 5th wheel and my pin is 3400lbs so I am comfortable with the weights. YMMV

I full-time a 20k triple axle 5'er and after running the numbers, ordering a 4500 was absolutely the right choice. Wide track steering, well north of 6k payload, and much stouter axles and frame for the same price as a 1 ton. I also feel that the 10k worth of truck weight (unloaded) prevents any feeling of the tail wagging the dog. Icing on the cake is the 4.44 rear end that keeps the Cummins at the recommended RPM for long-term highway travel (2000-2100).

Honestly, the brakes alone are worth the upgrade, in my mind. In a trip from Maine to Texas, I didn't realize that the trailer brakes weren't working (due to a faulty 7-pin connector) until Kentucky... that's how good the huge 4500/5500 brakes are. 75 gallons in two factory tanks keeps me on the road longer, too. Based on the feedback I get travelling, resale will not be a problem once our family goes back to a bricks and sticks home. Good luck with your purchase!20210724_182341.jpg20211108_175536.jpg

Funny if you go on the Ram Canada site and build a loaded 4wd diesel limited 4500 cab and chassis it's actually a little cheaper than a loaded 1500 ecodiesel limited. Still have to put a bed on it, but it blows my mind. That's a lot more truck.

Yeah but a nice looking fully loaded hauler body can run over 30k, at least the ones I was looking at were anyway. That's almost 130k for a tv. Now yes you can get a cheapo flat hauler bed for 5k if that's all your after but i can't imagine spending that much on a truck then putting a cheap hauler bed on it. That's exactly why I stuck with the ho hd 3500 so I didn't have to spend all that extra on a hauler bed . Don't get me wrong they are awesome as hell looking but i just moved weight out of my truck and off the fiver pin so im at my legal limits and I'm hauling a 27,000 lb 50' trailer. Now if you want 14 batteries , an Onan 7000, auxillery fuel tank, extra tool boxes then a 3500 ain't gonna work for you but I found a way to get my pin down to 5200 (when most fiver models my size are over 6k) and save me $30k+ on a hauler body.

I'm an open book if anyone wants to go a similar route -- this combo was 61k + 7k + 2k USD (truck, bed, shipping from dealer to upfitter). Im sure prices have only gone one way since July, but at today's prices it should still be a very competitive price with a 1 ton.

Just dont forget the 50 gallon option fuel tank. It's worth every pound of extra weight.

Laramie, actually -- I won't say it was the easiest route, but I simply bought from the dealer with the lowest OTD price, which ended up being Bud Clary in Seattle metro (even though I lived in Maine). They hooked me up with a great shipper to get it to the east coast... considering what was involved, I don't think it could have gone much smoother.Screenshot_20220110-112629_Gmail.jpgScreenshot_20220110-112550_Office.jpg
