What strange days we live in.

Passing car dealer lots and seeing them empty give me a real uneasy feeling. Seeing empty store shelves which is common in 3rd world countries does not bode well.

Clean used trucks are in high demand. I checked the value of my 2014 RAM and it is around $20k. Even for these days that seem a bit high. But there are other things I'm thinking about. I really wouldn't mind banking the cash. I bought the truck when there was a great need to haul things and pull a trailer. Those things have kind of run their course. I work from home so I don't drive it much. Literally I'm driving it to the county trash collection center once a week. Maybe 10 miles round trip. For most all errands we take the wife's 300. For basic pickup truck duties; I have a '79 Ramcharger that needs a transmission. I can have that on the street again investing about $500 in it. Reason I've not done that yet is I don't have a garage or any kind of shop space here so I would have to work in the dirt. (long story).
Funny as it seem I wouldn't mind driving a 43 year old truck. I would fit in better with the locals for sure.
Anyone else considering parting with their RAM in these strange days?

If I planned to sell my truck sometime in the next few years it would be now.

The new car dealers I drive past seem to be as dense as they ever were..

My Ram is paid off and I've seen similar ones asking for more at five or six years old than I paid for mine brand new. That's pretty weird.

I don't know where all these empty car lots are supposed to be, all the ones I drive past seem to be as dense as they ever were.
I live in Montana and all the lots here are decimated new and used. I drive by Dave Smith motors (largest CRDJ dealership in the world) and largest gm dealership west of the mississip I believe and they are a shell of what they used to be. Dennis Dillon 4th largest RAM dealership in the world and not many vehicles there either. Good buddy is connected to the local Chevy dealership and they are at about 1/4 inventory as they normally would be. Local GMC/Mercedes dealer looks like it is out of business. Honda dealership which is a high volume dealer has no inventory..My buddy works for a large Ford dealership in Ohio (might be the oldest dealership in Ohio) and he said they have no inventory and right know they could get trucks full of new cars every single day and they would get caught up. I am sure some places are doing better than others but my eyeballs tell me differently.

I'm in the middle of NC and the car lots new and used are low on inventory.

I will sell mine when my ‘22 arrives.

I do find it odd that NADA and KBB values are wildly different for my current truck, with NADA showing a much higher value. Carmax seems to side with KBB.

Sure aren't here, but it varies. The Toyota lot is tumbleweeds and sad clowns. Chevy and Ford trucks are spaced way out to make it look less pitiful. Honda and Nissan lots are kind of in the middle. CJDR seem to be doing ok. We actually have an Alfa Romeo lot, and it's got zero Alfa Romeos. It's just a use car lot, now. I don't know who was buying those Alfas anyway, I never see one on the road here.

Traded in my 2017 Ram and they gave me 30,500 for it which I turned around and bought my 2022 night edition with it . Seems like the used market is up about 40% .

No plans to sell mine anytime soon. It's just over 5yrs old now and paid off.
With 15,700 miles on a crew cab 4x4, 2500HD that still looks showroom new I'm sure I could get a lot for it, but I don't need the debt agsin and I prefer the looks of my 4th gen to the 19+ HDs.

I agree though, if I had any thoughts of selling it, now is the time...trouble is you'd likely never get any kind of a deal on the new 22s, so till you pay the premium for one, how much are we really ahead? Tough call.

Here in my area of PA, many new car lots are very thin on inventory. Never seen them like this my entire life. Toyota dealer has basically nothing, big Ford dealer very thin, Mitsubishi dealer basically nothing new on the lot. Crazy times ny friends...

Yeah, each of us have different needs. My RAM is paid for and I'm assessing my NEED for it and considering my need isn't that great anymore. If I sold it tomorrow I could still borrow my dads '18 Bighorn for errands where I need to haul something. I love the truck but I cannot help be ultimately practical and not too sentimental about it.
I think ultimately I'll let it go.
I have a coworker with a Hemi RAM pickup that is all about modding it. But I just can't take that seriously. My first thought on that is "Get out of here! It weighs over 5000 lbs." Even the Challengers are Charger are too dang heavy. It seems funny to me. That isn't what a muscle car is. That is like a fat guy in a foot race. But that is just my old school way of thinking. Maybe it is a notion left over from high school. It is that 'cool factor'. And even though it would shake and rattle, even though it would be cold in the winter and hot in the summer; I would really prefer driving it around over the RAM. It looks like this, same 2 tone paint, minus the lift and big tires.

Same here NADA is way higher the KBB. NADA show if I sold my 2015 today myself I can get what I paid for it in 2016 :O KBB is a couple grand lower !
I bet the estimators use KBB price to buy off you and sell at NADA mark up :O

The lots up here are getting better but still no where near 100%
Store shelves are not 100% either.

If you’re intention is to trade up (new, bigger, more options) then do it.

If you don’t need the vehicle at all, do it.

Replacement cost is the biggest issue right now. Sure it’s worth a lot, but you’re going to spend a lot.

Dealers would enjoy more inventory, but they are more profitable than ever before. More than anything they’re afraid to get caught with their pants down on overpriced used inventory.

I bought a 2019 2500 Bighorn diesel at the end of that year for 42,000. It had a MSRP of 59,800. The reason I got such a great deal is that it was a RWD truck. I just traded it in on a 2022 2500 Bighorn night diesel 4X4, they gave me 54,500 and knocked 2400 off the new one. I normally never would have bought a new truck after only two years, but this a too good to pass up.

It was pretty thin in my town. Had to go North a ways to Fort Worth to find a dealer with plenty of trucks.

This is maybe a tangent but the whole idea of a car shortage is sort of weird to me; everywhere I drive it seems like 1 in 5 suburban houses and maybe a third or more rural properties have got at least one car parked outside that's obviously not been driven in a long time and on its way to being reclaimed by Earth. A lot of them are "around the bend" and can't reasonably be restored but before they get to that point, especially out West and South where rust isn't really a factor - I bet there are 5 million or more cars sitting in peoples' yards that could be brought back to life in a weekend by somebody with a wrench and a willingness to buy some parts.

It would be easy to misinterpret this as hubris and I'm trying to say it with as little ego as possible. I know I'm probably a lot more experienced under the hood than most people, not counting those who do it occupationally. That's not meant to be a boast just a matter of growing up poor and not having another choice you either learn how to make old junk run or you wind up missing work too often and sleeping on cardboard. So I look at any unharvested, disused car as potential transportation and I want to bring them all home like abandoned puppies and make 'em go again. It seems like a real missed opportunity every time I see somebody let a perfectly repairable resource just rot into the ground.

It's not like an old 1990s computer or brick phone or other piece of technology that just can't be used in any practical capacity anymore - an old car is still valid transportation even if it's 20 or 30 or 40 years old and I know an awful lot of folks on here aren't inclined to care about the environment but you can't deny that whatever pollution and other industrial effects come from building a car was already spent building those so if you can get more use out of them that's a good thing.

I guess I'm just surprised that we even got to the stage of having a car shortage, we're drowning in cars if anyone would pick up a wrench and turn it.

I would love to trade mine in but the issue is I Need a truck so while I'll get top dollar on trade I'll pay out the nose for the new one. Financially it makes no sense for me to do so right now.

For those that don't really need a truck or have an extra vehicle it may be a good time to sell and cash out. All though I don't really expect prices to come down any time soon if ever. This "new normal" is here to stay for a while
