Had another road trip with the Carven progressive setup on my truck, it was so bad drone wise I nearly bought a stock muffler and was prepared to install it in the hotel parking lot! It's mind numbing drone on the freeway, in stop and go traffic, and I wont even mention the mountains!

I have a question, in my head I'd like to do away with the factory Y pipe, use a dual in dual out muffler (Borla Pro XS is my top contender) and then connect back to factory tails. Any comments on this setup? How far from the original muffler location should I put the new muffler?

Thanks!

What is your gear ratio? Did you try with the mds disabled? I had mild drone with carven progressive around 1600-1800 rpm in my truck but disabling mds lessened the drone. I have 3.92 gears so highway was fine because I was at 2000rpm. I swapped to a full borla stinger catback and like it a lot more. Deeper and more aggressive and slightly quieter.

The MDS is awful. I’m muffler and resonator deleted. It sounds like a 18 wheeler using the jake brake. I keep the mds disabled.

That is an excellent idea! In fact if I was to do it again I would probably go with an x pipe/muffler combo to save money and installation costs.
I got mine done this spring not long after I got my new truck. I already had an x pipe and 2 mufflers in my closet waiting to go on the last ram Haha

although with experience Im starting to think having the xpipe up front and the mufflers in the back is the optimal position for not having too much resonance inside the cab.
The only time I get what I would call drone is when I load up the engine in 8th going up a hill as I open the throttle it starts to drone but then it quickly downshifts to 7th and no more drone.

Very aggressive hemi tone when you romp on it and decently civil if you drive like a grandma, I love it!

That would involve a good amount of fab work. If you want something with less drone and good for highway and mountain cruising I recommend the Solo Mach40 kit

I kept the MDS off, for the noise and to limit the gear searching in traffic or on the hilly stuff. I have 3.21 gears so it stays in the "drone zone" of 1500-2000 rpm. Even went to Tow/Haul mode for the mountains to keep the transmission from constantly shifting.

This would be a cut before the factory Y, run pipes to the Borla, then pipes to the duals. Nothing else.

My last truck was a '12 with the 6 speed. Don't recall what gears. Had the factory Y pipe cut, into an x pipe, into 2 Dynomax VTs and out to 5" tips. Wasn't a huge fan of the sound (rather quiet), but it wasn't obnoxious with drone.

Yep, great system for good sound and quiet cabin. I've actually had the full Mach 44 kit on for a year now and really enjoy it. Not crazy loud, but has good tone and virtually no drone. I bet the Mach 40 would be good as well if you don't want a full system.

Swapped my Carven for a Borla pro xs and couldn't be happier. Carven drone on interstate was unbearable to listen to

I have the 24” magnaflow muffler, to replace the factory one and don’t have drone.

I just added the Carven Competitor (full cat-back) to my 2022 Limited and did a 450 mile interstate drive and the drone was tough for me (MDS on or off…it did not make a difference to me). The cold start sound is amazing, but even driving around town it is just a bit loud for me. I think maybe I should have just done the muffler delete and kept the resonators, but even that seems like it is still loud for some.

I see four possible options. 1) keep the current cat-back system and try and get used to it. 2) bite the bullet and replace the Carven Competitor cat-back system with a different exhaust all together. 3) have the OEM system put back on. Or 4) try and add the OEM resonators to the current Carven cat-back system and see if that eliminates the drone and tames the beast, so to speak.

You must be easily annoyed by sounds. I have had my Carven for like 30k miles and never once has it annoyed me.

Carven Progressive does have a good tone, but very annoying on trips, or when the MDS is on. Sounds great for a month or two. Slight drone.
Tried B2 Fabrication muffler.... Absolute design nightmare, Junk. Customer service... Absolute Jerks.
Tried Carven Progressive, great quality and fit... Slight Drone.
Currently have a K&N muffler on. Great quality and fit. Sound is awesome.
On a 1 to 10 scale of loudness, if stock is a 1 and a muffler delete is a 10. I would rate the Carven Progressive as a 7, and the K&N as a 4.
I have the K&N intake on as well. The muffler is slightly louder that the intake sound.
If you get a chance to listen to one, you will be pleasantly surprised. Recordings of the exhaust do not reflect the true sound.
