I couldn't find anything specific about this here, so I wanted to ask. Is the "base model" of Alpharex Headlights worth it? I as because I see those on Amazon, but I also see a "LUXX" model that is almost 4x the price (base is $200-something, LUXX is $800-something). This is the Base Model headlights I'm referring to.

Also, do I need to modify anything with AlfaOBD, or should these be straight plug'n'play on a 2012 RAM 1500 (stock reflector halogen lamps)? And would it be a problem to use LED bulbs in these?

LEDs perform poorly in projectors. Found that out after putting 2 kits in my truck (hi and low). They are real bright up close and will convince you they're great, but as soon as you go driving with them you will realize you have absolute **** lighting at any distance beyond 3-4 cars.

Just put halogens in them. Philips Xtreme vision or oscam night breakers are both pretty good.

As far as the lights themselves, I can't help with that, as I haven't used them.

The base ones suck total *****! If you are going to get alpharex headlights go with at least the Luxx series ... but be prepared to probably get light out errors ... I couldn't get them to work on my truck but my buddy on his 17' had no issues at all ..

@meubin10 I have the ModifyStreet branded version of the base model in my '15. Only thing I changed with AlfaOBD was the turn and running lights to LED. I run Hikari Ultra LEDs in the highs and Sylvania ZXE(halogen) in the lows. I also added the dedicated DRL circuits for the brow lights to my truck so they function like factory and can be turned on/off through the radio. Work great with no errors, plenty of light.
If your looking to upgrade your factory fog lights, the Diode Dynamics SS3 SAE Pro level fog lights

Thanks. I'm not dead set on LEDs. I do like the way they look, but it ultimately doesn't matter. I don't have to drive much, and that's especially true of night driving. I'll do some more digging, and see if I get more opinions here as well.

You have a 2012 so its not going to care as much as the new ones. LED isnt even an option for the 2012's in Alfaobd. The only thing you can enable is HID which I did not find it to make a difference. Pre 2013 trucks are much easier to deal with when it comes to LED and bulb conversions so you will be good to go no matter what path you decide to take

That makes sense. I've never used AlfaOBD, but I've heard it mentioned often as it relates to the RAM trucks and LEDs, so it was just an assumption. I can say I did put some cheap LEDs in the reflector housings a while back and I've never had any issues with them.

The way the light shoots down the road, I sent them right back because of that too .... but if you are not going to do a lot of night driving then you might like them ... try them out, you can always send them back ...

Fair enough. What do you mean by "shoots down the road"? Was it not related to how you had them aimed? But yeah, wouldn't hurt to try, and send them back if I don't like 'em.

No nothing with the aiming, base models are supposed to use halogen bulbs, LEDs on these models just splatter then light everywhere, they are bright but not a sharp cutoff line and it is very blinding to oncoming traffic

The base ones look great but light output is poor. If you going to change the headlights I would go with the more expensive option like the Luxx or Nova for the better light output. Let me know me if you would like a quote on them

Exactly , when I got mine I was like no way, my quads had better output with the LEDs that the base ones lol .... I am working on some retrofits but really don't have time to work on them consistently, but as soon as I get them done I will post what I did ... I think "retrofit" headlights have a better look, output and are more unique than Alpharex and Morimotos, everyone has them and they all look the same lol ....

Retrofitted headlights as long as quality parts are used offer great looks and output. I assume you are using Morimoto parts? I have done a couple myself and was extremely happy with the results.

If anyone needs retrofit parts we can get pretty much anything you need.

I am not sure if I am going to go with Miromoto parts yet, I have a set of OEM quads that I am about to start opening up, but if you can give me a list of everything needed an a price on it I would appreciate it very much ... hell I might even do some custom work for others lol ... I have already been hit up about making some by some guy out here that heard me saying I am going to do mine lol ...

There are a ton of options when it comes to a retro. There are several projector options and shroud options. prices vary depending on what you want. The MH1 will be the easiest to install mainly due to its small size and easy mounting solution. there is many shroud options and I am not familiar with which will fit without cutting, unless you dont mind cutting the shroud to fit then pretty much all options are on the table.

I have no problems with the base model lights, but then again I had 12 year old housings with 10 year old SilverStar Ultras.

The only thing I had to do with AlfaOBD was enable the quad lights.

I put leds in my 2015 projectors. Worked real good for a few miles. Then one light would go out then come on and other one wii go out. Not sure what was going on I was 1000 miles from home so just traded it. Love my 2019 with led factory lights

Alpharex Headlights are not worth it! Got error codes, turn signals not bright enough in sunlight & DRL's do not work with factory settings. Paid $1,200.00 and end up sending them back. By the way GTR LED is the best LED's but costly.

I've had the Alpharex Jet black Luxx led projectors on for almost a year now. The light output on them are nice & bright. However I have a msg on saying headlight out. But it's not out. That's no big deal to me. It's just a msg. As far as performance goes I'd say they are great. They have sharp cutoff Lines and they are 6000k. Another plus is they are plug in play. If you want the new look of the daytime running lights like whats on 19 or newer you have to hook up the module that comes with it. It's also plug in play. Looks awesome.
