I know this is off topic regarding the vehicle specifically, but I need help. I have a 16 foot car trailer I pull with my RAM 2500. I need an electric winch. It would seem that I could pull power from the unused 4 pin connector (I use the other round one for the trailer lights and brakes)...is there such a connection for hooking a winch to the truck connector for power? Thanks for any help.

LouM,
So no is the answer? Just kidding. I guess its due to the power requirement of the winch, the wiring would be insufficient. Thanks for the link.

From the 4 pin no but from the 7 pin there is sorta, provided you use a battery on the trailer. My buddy has a winch mounted inside his enclosed car hauler to pull a vehicle in and has a battery along side the winch that is recharged by the +12V from the 7 pin trailer plug.
I've see similar set ups using a tool box to hold the winch and battery on open car haulers. Even dump trailers use a similar set up to run the hydraulics.
You don't need a big winch for pulling a vehicle onto a trailer.

Yes, there is a +12 volt connection in the 7 pin.
I don't know what size wire RAM uses in the harness.
If your lucky it will be a #12 and it is protected by a 40 or 50 amp fuse.
A battery with a good charge will not blow that fuse, using a winch for very long
will over heat the wiring and take out the fuse.
The little hydraulic power packs don't draw near the current most winches do.
I'm thinking that my electric hydraulic brake actuator that I need to install on a trailer
uses that connection as a power supply for the brake pump as well as the input
from the brake actuator in the truck.

NO NO and NO;

However large cabling can be run to the rear and connected to an Anderson connector,
with the winch wired to a matching Anderson.

LouM.
Sp WAS looking at this company's page. Interesting they will make me a cable with Anderson connectors, then I would have to just put the opposite matching on on the winch cables. i could mount the connector under the truck bumber at the back. Have you done this or do you know someone who has...just looking for options so i want have to put a car battery on the trailer.

Spot on. We run winches on trailers all the time. Only way to do it right and not have to rewire every truck you use to pull the trailer is to put a battery on the trailer. Charge it just like you do an RV battery, through the trailer plug. Even with REALLY large welding cable run from the truck battery to the rear bumper then to the winch, you get a lot of electrical loss over that long a distance. Also, a battery is way less expensive than 30' of cable and the connectors.

I use the Anderson connectors for my generator (25 Kw) connector and for built in booster cables.
