I sleep with a cpap and window fan on. Power went off at 2:30am from a storm going through. I got up, ran an extension cord from the truck in the garage to my bedroom. Put the truck into the acc position and plugged both into the extension cord. Both the cpap and fan worked for the rest of the night. Got up around 6am. The truck didn't have enough power to start, but it did let me get a good nights sleep.

Most of the time I have an R2D2 phone charger plugged in.
The other times its:
Inflatable Halloween and Christmas decorations (see profile pic) when parked.
Laptop while working in the truck (I place it on the front middle seat while I sit in the back).
TV & Game or Blu Ray player (typically on tailgate).
Projector and Blu Ray player

My laptop (my dad's drew too much power), cel phone, air mattress inflator (tripped a couple times, but got the job done) .drill battery charger. Be more useful if it was a bit bigger, but comes in handy at times.

The 400w aux power plugs are basically a gimmick. Yes they’ll charge a laptop or tool batteries, but most power tools(corded) are out. Maybe they have more power available with dual alternators, that I don’t know. I charge my jump pacs via 12v charger. Tries once to run a power tool and kicked off immediately. A true capability to run a 15amp circuit would be welcome.
I have Dual Alternators .Inverter is still only Rated at 400Watts.

We had power outage for quite some time, and without a generator for the house, I thought I’d try to use my babies bottle warmer in the truck, but it didn’t have enough juice to run it.

Wonder how I might use it if ever. Real world says I’d want more wattage.
We had it in our 16 2500 and now in our 18 3500 . . .uses?
Keeping in mind that we are on the road a bunch (75K hitch miles in 6 years)
1) Anything Apple
2) Power bank for remote charging
3) LI Battery for 19V Rattle Gun
4) Battery for Spinal Cord Stim Implant
5) 2 different laptops

I use the word gimmick because very few things, in my world, are under that limit. Something in the 1500 watt area is about minimum that is useful to me, at least in the bed of the truck. It is a gimmick to me, because it rarely is of any use.
Well 1500 watt range means store bought inverter or F150 Hybrid with on board power. As you can see by the many posts here its proves a useful item for their needs. Anyone can easily buy a DC to AC inverter made by Bestec with 400 watt power for $40. So would I order one with a new vehicle purchase..probably not. If it comes with the vehicle I purchase will i put it to use..yes

I'm a retired Ram/Jeep engineer that was in charge of the battery/starter/alternator system. If you need more than 400W you go directly to the battery terminals, or on later models the "HAPP" (Hi Amperage Power Point) if so equipped - and then use an aftermarket inverter.
Alternator size is not correlated to the 400W outlet.
The Ram Upfitter web site has alternator output curves that will show you how much alternator capacity is available, minus whatever accessories are turned on and what's necessary to power the engine electronics (12-20 amps). Alternator output capability is totally dependent on engine RPM and underhood temperature.
If powering off of the battery(s) alone the available energy is totally dependent on the battery temperature, battery age, battery state of charge, and the rate of amperage draw.
FYI - recharging the vehicle battery by simply driving or running the engine will take longer to recharge than using an auxiliary charger since a good sized charger will provide a higher recharge voltage that the vehicles alternator which has a regulated output voltage curve. If the vehicle has a start/stop system that uses a second small AGM battery then higher charge voltage becomes more problematic if too high.

I have used it mostly for phones and computers. I did one time use it to demonstrate a microwave working after I sold it on craigslist. It didn't work well but it worked...

Many corded tools, like a power drill, would work according to the tag on the side of the drill, but most times they forget that it takes more power to get that drill motor moving initially

If anyone is thinking of up sizing their Ram's inverter, donnot by a modified sine wave inverter like most of what Harbor Freight sells. They cost less but can damage sensitive electronics. Always try to get a Pure sine wave inverter. Also you may have to go a size or two heavier gauge wires to feed a larger inverter.

The 400-watt rating (3.6) amps is limited by a fuse or breaker. Those are sized to protect the wire. As 440scout stated, you have to have heavier gauge wire if you up-size your inverter. Also good information about getting a pure sine wave inverter.

I ran my wife's Oxygen Concentrator while on a trip out of town. Worked great. We also have a Town and Country van that has the same.
