Looking at replacing stock Goodyears by summer with a light truck, all-terrain, load range C tire. Truck is mainly driven on the road; with some minor off-road at the farm needed; with consideration for winter snow & ice; might be on gravel roads occaissionally. I've narrowed down to either the Generals or the Coopers. Have a friend who really likes the Coopers. But the reviews on-line indicate those aren't as good in the winter as the Generals. Locally, I see more Coopers than Generals on trucks. Needing some real-world experiences for comparing these two options.

I had the AT3s on the Colorado I traded in and ran one winter with them and had only one issue in winter. The tires gripped really well taking off and braking, but when turning liked to slide. Next tire I try will be the Grabbers ATx.

I would like to add that I had BFG ATs and they were a good tire until it got in the teens and below, then they became hard and useless in the snow.

Look at NITTO, good tires.

I had previous generation Cooper AT3's and they were good on everything except snow. They had little traction (seriously - I live in central Minnesota). Found out their big tread lugs didn't have much siping, which they've added on their newest version.

Meantime, I went with General Grabber ATX after reading Tire Rack review rankings. These are outstanding, and I agree with the rankings. You can google and see. They don't carry Cooper, so you'll have to ask elsewhere for modern Cooper ratings. Can't go wrong with General, though. Made in USA still, as well as Cooper. Other highly ranked AT is Falken Wildpeak AT, but that is made in Thailand by Sumitomo. Not so sure how tight their quality control is.

TireRack does have info on Coopers. Have been reading more reviews there and other places. Common thread is still that the Coopers are not as good in snow/ice; whereas the Generals have more positive reviews. The Coopers are a tire that I wanted to like when I first checked them out but they just don't review as well.

I never had bad luck with anything Cooper/Mastercraft/Starfire. I can't say the same for other name brands.

There's gives and takes to all of them. What you gain in winter traction, you will typically loose in tire life, noise, etc.

I have 20000 plus miles on my AT3 4S. They have handled everything our north jersey weather has given us. Snow, rain, sleet est. preformed flawlessly. Can’t speak to longevity yet, but seem to be wearing fine. You also also want to check Falken wildpeak AT3, haven’t heard a complaint yet form forum members.
