If its just that one spot and the chip on the valve seat then yes. But what will that cost as opposed to a brand new head?

This was mine.

Looks like you need new valve guide, valve seat, valve, valve job. Got lucky that valve didn’t break and do the same as Ole bucks. Call a machine shop and see what they quote vs buying a new head.

Side story I had a valve drop in a Briggs lawnmower engine I had built for racing. That was fun. Took out the piston and the cylinder wall too… looked just like Ole bucks picture except with gouges down the cylinder wall from when the valve seat dropping out.

Machine shop said probably a couple hundred bucks per head to freshen up, obviously plus parts. Only place I found reman. Heads were rock auto and they were about 700-800 each. If you guys have any good decent priced places for remanufactured heads I’m all ears.

going through what i recently did you are on the right track with the machine shop. I was fortunate to have an old school 4.7 tech machinist that knew what needed to be done to these heads to make them right. You already have the good cams just get them freshened up new lash/lifters and what not. luckily i had a donor engine that i used because my heads and pistons were garbage.

I found a company that sells complete remanufactured heads for $425 each. What are your guys thoughts on if I should just replace the bad or both if I end up not being able to get one head repaired. Debating both new heads for the simple fact of how “fun” it is getting these motors apart haha

just my two cents unless its a strict budget, meaning one head and eating for a week i would do both. Put a new on one side and its back to factory specs while the other side has humpteen miles on it and something is going to give. That's just my opinion. Are the new heads complete meaning ready to bolt on or will they still need cams lifters springs and stuff installed?

Complete heads with valve train and cams. Probably have to use my own timing gears and Egr is my guess. Seems like a pretty good deal I’m thinking.

What was the difference in cams from the 2008 4.7l to prior years of the 4.7l and did they improve anything else on those heads. Just want to make sure if I order new heads that they don’t send me heads prior to 08 which I know were prone to issues

if you have a true Ho 4.7 hang on to those cams !!!!! They are becoming very hard to find. There is a guy named Martin on youtube that is a 4.7 technical nut. and i mean that in a good way !! He has several videos on the 4.7 HO cams and the differences. Its my understanding that all new heads or reman heads have had the bugs worked out of them from the previous years. HO cams have different markings and ridges on them. If you get new heads compare your cams to the new ones.

knew i had this, Its a copy and paste.

The HO cams have a bigger Intake lobe. Exhaust lobe is the same. I will tell you like this. If you can find the HO cams get them. They will make a difference...And if you do get them get a 08 4.7 intake manifold and 70mm throttle body...You will have a Nice running 4.7 with this setup....Ho cams=15-30HP.. 08 intake manifold=20-30HP...Somewhere around those numbers..

Thanks! Yeah my truck is an 2008 so I’ve been reading that’s the year and up to have for the 4.7. Was the H.O. Motor in all the 2008 and up 4.7?

No no that I am aware of. From my understanding it was a certain type of jeep, Dakota, and a few others. That youtube guy I was talking about is called martinbuilds. He actually goes to the junkyard and removes the HO cams and HO intakes from these vehicles. He describes what to look for.

Oh ok that makes sense. I wish I could get my hands on some H O cams since I’ll be putting in brand new heads. I’ve checked all over the internet and yeah you really can’t find those cams.

What were the expected gains with the HO cams in the 08+ 4.7l? Also how much would you be looking to get for them? And final question is what would need to be changed/adjusted to accommodate the HO cams? Thanks

no adjustments just bolt them in. But why you are there new lifters and rockers would not hurt. dont know about yours but i upgraded to the new rockers that had the oiling hole relocated for better lubrication.

Yeah I’m getting remanufactured head built right now so everything in them will be brand new. What are the gains in the newer 4.7 compared to the pre 08+?
