I have a 2013 Laramie, 6 speed 44-45 TCase, on Friday it was above freezing and I had to back on the lawn so I used 4Low, the truck then sat Friday night until Sunday afternoon. I moved the truck around the yard, stopped, put trans in N, selected 4Lock, it shifted fine, then I parked. The temp dropped to around 10 over the weekend into this morning. I left for work this morning and the TCase was stuck in low, the light on the dash showed 4Lock, I shifted into 2WD and it was still in low. The TCase is in low no matter what I shift it to. If I shift the trans into N, select 4Low it will blink a bunch of times and either show “shift not completed” or “service 4WD system immediately” I have tried rolling it out in forward and reverse, shifting from 4L to 4Lock into 2wd while rolling, I’ve tried it all and I’m still stuck in low. Does ANYONE have an answer to this messed up situation? Help me I’m stuck in Lodi again ✌️

May need to get it into a heated garage for an hour or two, or a tarp and a salamander heater.

It's probably just the actuator for the transfer case, I'd trying thawing the TC/actuator out as mentioned above. Also
Check the wiring harness going to the TC, bad or loose connection maybe the issue.

I had taken the actuator off last night, out was 0 when I gave up at 11 pm. I could turn the actuator pin back and forth but yes I’m definitely putting it in a garage tonight when I get home. Thanks for the suggestions

Unhook battery for about 20 mins re connect often fixes it when people have this issue.

Thanks to all for the input, for all of the issues I’ve posted about there have always been many people that offer an opinion. I often curse the internet but I’m glad these forums are here and that there are many people on here willing to help. I’m a mechanically able person but I’ve always had old square bodies and then 2nd gen Rams. All are a far cry from how the 4 and 5 gen rams are set up. Thanks all ✌️Ya

I've come to the conclusion that my truck is just plain ornery at low (-40) temps. Then irritable when the temp comes up to 0 (32F) the following week, and grumpy when the snow is deep. Drove him anyway in 4 low for a bit then did some back and forth, and then shut down for 30 seconds. I'm convinced that low temps bugger up the electronics until the cab warms up.

If it shifted back finally once warm I'd unplug the shift motor on the transfer case and clean the contacts as a first attempt of repair. Moisture in there can cause that issue. If the transfer case isn't slipping or leaking it's usually related to that motor. Looks like a starter attached to the transfer case.

I agree with the shift motor posts (or related connector-fuse, etc).

Let us know what it turns out to be.

Hello all, I’ve been slacking on updating my posts when I have found a cure to the issue so here goes…..
I did find the cause to the 4WD issue and although I thought it was unlikely, it was the transfer case motor. Behind the gear that turns the T/C rod, there are contacts that align with particular spots on the gear. When they align correctly and it sends a signal to the computer that the truck is in low , high ect. When I placed my T/C in low it lost connection or misaligned thus not letting the computer to send the signal to make the motor switch back to high or 2WD. The sound I heard that I thought was the T/C motor was actually the front axle motor locking and unlocking. I purchased a new motor, removed the old one, aligned the shaft into the correct position, installed the new motor and it all works great now.✌️

Disconnecting the battery has worked for me when I’ve had air suspension issues. Sometimes it will work for other things. From what my mechanic friend has told me, the truck can actually become “confused” and stick itself in low or high.

Do you know what the root issue was? Broken plastic piece that contains contacts? Skipped gear, etc?

I think it was just corrosion, moisture gets inside the housing behind the gear. Unfortunately there’s really no way to get the plastic housing apart without destroying something in the process. The electric motor is easily serviced though

so before I had the 4 Low issue my T/C motor wouldn’t switch at all because of never being switched by the previous owner. There are 4 10mm head bolts that hold the unit to the T/C, it’s perfectly fine to cut the separate brown wire and reconnect with a splice connector. This back plate does come off. Make sure to soak it with Free All before trying to remove the 3 Torque bit screws. Inside you’ll find the worm gear and ring gear. Unless these are broken, about the only thing you can do is put new grease on the gears and silicone everything to keep out natures little surprises. The electric motor casing can be removed, clean the contacts and grease the end bearing. Reseal the casing or even better, go to your local parts store and round up a thin O-ring to place between the cover and casing. When reassembling, slide the springs and contacts into the slots and retain them with a small eyeglass screwdriver or something of the like. Then slide the guts down into the case, making sure it seats all the way. It can be a pain in the **** cutter but if you have an aversion to spending your hard earned cash on something you can fix, then go for it and tear that sucker apart. I’ve always made my own repairs since I was 9. Aside from keeping some kaching in my wallet, it has enabled me to help my friends and family out of situations where they may have gotten screwed over by others willing to take advantage of unsuspecting people broken down on the side of the road. Plus it also gives a guy piece of mind and a sense of satisfaction knowing if something goes bad, you can take care of. Also, this one’s for the young fellas, a guy that can change his own oil and fix his own rig sure impresses the ladies. Hope this helps someone out there. P.S. Just so you all know, I’m some cases, this T/C motor is the same as a GM unit. ✌️
