My 2019 Ram classis 5.7 just turned 35,000 miles yesterday. It's been perfect since September when I bought it.

It's been pretty cold here in Southern Illinois for the past few weeks. The other day it was 7 degrees. When I started the truck with the remote start I heard a short (1-2 seconds) squeal and then all was quiet. Didn't think anything about it.

Today, at 18 degrees, I started it with the remote start and it squealed for 10-12 seconds (a hellofa long time when your engine is squealing!!), and then it quit. I was just about to turn it off when the squealing stopped. Scared the heck out of me. It wasn't long enough for me to determine what it was, and I was too far away.

I think it might have been a pulley or power steering pump but I cannot be certain. It didn't sound like a serpentine belt slipping. Hope it wasn't the crankshaft getting wiped...ha.

Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas? I drove it about 30 miles and everything was perfectly fine. Re-started it when warm and not a peep...one of THOSE issues....

Well for one thing 2019's don't have a power steering pump it electric steering could just be the belt slipping a bit if its cold/damp out does it still run fine?

I was trying to find a Goodyear gator back belt but no longer available. Then continental was producing in and they quit.

What’s a good belt??

I’ve what sounds like the same squeal in below 30F for the last 4 winters. Hasn’t caused an iss issue so I leave it alone.

Same here, this is the second winter with my truck. Im over yonder here in MN and we been having negative degree temps lately.
Did the same thing, remote start and it was screeching from the belts.
im gonna assume, with rubber belts and ultra low temps; the belts are going to slip from the pulleys until it warms up from friction...

Yep. I’m going to swap belts with the gates super duty. Rick auto has the “green” belt fairly cheap and I need a new cabin filter so I’ll get both for about $40. Scared the hell out of me the first time. Yikes.

Mine has been squealing as well, I am curious if a new belt solves the issue for you.

2014, I had this issue winter. Truck under warranty, now this was really bad. Dealer changed EVERYTHING. Never did find it. Sold it 2017 and it still did it occasionally. Never an issue apart from embarrassment in car parks on a brand new truck!

I have the same issue here in CT. when its super cold I get that sometimes for upwards of 20-30 seconds. usually happens when it is in the single digits. I never worried about it it has happened for the last 4 winters and im at 63k miles

We've had some very cold temps around here the past week or so, and mine has exhibited a squeal for the first time since new on a few cold-start days. Could be a idler pulley or a well broken in drive belt.

Could be a idler pulley, but I'm thinking more like a well broken in drive belt. With a slightly elevated temp this morning it was quiet. I'm not alone on my street. The other day while brushing off snow I heard a neighbors car squealing.

Belts squeals in the cold the most because the belt gets harder and if it's already somewhat brittle or losing tension it's going to cause it to squeal even more .... old man next door when I was growing up one day heard my Pops belt squealing and he came over with a bar of soap tells my Pops "carefully let the bar of soap rub on the belt" .... it stopped squealing after that ...

They don't make belts like they use to so the bar of soap is probably no longer the solution, but it does help. My corolla's belt was squealing last winter, got a bar of soap, let it rub on the inside and the sides of the belt til it stopped squealing and it hasn't squealed since .... try the bar of soap but only if the belt doesn't look cracked, brittle or losing color ...

My 17 squeals when it's really cold (below 0° F) for about a minute or so, then quiets down. My Trailhawk did it too.

For years I worked on vehicles that had the old “V” belts that occasionally squealed when they stretched but could easily be tightened up.

Then came the serpentine belt that was supposed to be the cure-all for auto belt systems…could not be tightened because there was no need for 100,000 miles.

So now my 2019 Ram Classic belt squeals when cold and is apparently stretched out at 30,000 and needs to be replaced with another super high quality green belt for only $45.

How wonderful technology is….
