Hello Rams & Ramettes –

Jan 31st I placed a factory order with Kippie Taylor [email protected] at Mark Dodge in Lake Charles LA based on reported experiences here and I am very pleased. I’ve always wanted to special order a vehicle from the manufacturer but til now I have been able to find what I wanted on dealer lots.

Having bought new cars before I knew dealer invoice is ~11% under MSRP so that was my target price. I walked into my local dealer (Houston TX) where I get service done on my 2019 Ram 1500 Classic V6 regular cab/8’ box and got the normal dealer runaround – gotta pay MSRP & pay a large deposit since they’d never be able to sell a truck like I wanted in a million years if I backed out. Then I searched this site.

After initially contacting Mark Dodge Jan 26th Kippie and I settled on a build, agreed on a price, I paid my $1000 deposit and had a VON by Jan 31st. Feb 2nd she gave me a VIN.

I am pleased enough with my current truck to know that I still want a 1500 4X2 Classic V6 regular cab/8’ box, but I want to roll the clock back 45,000 miles, take advantage of my truck’s inflated value, and check off some option boxes that you NEVER find on reg cab long beds on dealer lots. I also fear they will stop making the classic and as a technology-hating luddite I dislike the constant stream of electronic gewgaws they load up each new generation of vehicles with. I want a truck I’ll be happy with for 150-200k miles while others are enamored with Teslas and the like. My needs are simple since I have no trailers, no kids, grandkids, or spouse – carry me and haul my motorcycle with the tailgate closed.

So, here’s the new truck –

2022 1500 Classic Tradesman 4X2, reg cab w/8’ bed
V6
Limited Slip w/3.55 gear ratio
Class IV hitch
Power & Remote Package
SXT Package
Chrome 20 X 8 wheels
Full-sized spare
Flame Red exterior
Sliding rear window
Soft tonneau cover
Spray-in bedliner
Black interior
Ram floormats

Wait time guesstimate was 18 weeks but with a simple build - I know the bedliner will add some time - I wouldn't be surprised if it comes in earlier. we'll see.

Kippie shot me a price @ 88-89% off MSRP without haggling so I was ecstatic - $33,535 before destination & TTL. I can keep my truck, trade it, or sell it myself. Why can’t more dealers do business that way? My local dealer has very few new trucks on the lot; they should be delighted to get more special orders and do all they can to get them. Instead I am singing the praises of a dealer 125 miles away and recommending them to you all. Dumb way to do business if you ask me.

I'll update as things develop.

Very nice truck! Sensible, practical, chrome in the right places, should be ok on fuel, ..AND it looks great! That's about what I would have ordered too (or maybe the SWB). You're going to have a lot of fun with it.

Yeah, it's surprising to me how regular cab trucks have become such morphodites in the truck market that dealers are afraid they'll get 'stuck' with one. How things change, huh?

Just curious what radio/stereo comes in that pkg?

Thanks Jeep. 5 inch screen with am/fm. If you’re asking radio model number I have no idea. The SXT package comes with Sirius radio but I’d honestly prefer to pay $200 less and get rid of the Sirius. I have all my music on a thumb drive and just plug it into the USB and go

Hope that answered your question

No kidding on the regular cabs. Used to be nearly all the pickups you saw were regular cabs. Now you can hardly find one in any color but white and they’re all work truck configurations, like my current Ram.

Congrats, very nice truck. Can't beat getting exactly what you want. I miss having an 8' bed sometimes but my needs changed so here I am.

Heh, Heh, I can't believe how similar we think. I had to visit four dealer before I found one who would order a truck just the way I wanted it. I got all the arguments / comments from the dealers ( and others as well ) about my 2WD V6 combination.
I have been considering doing exactly what you did as I do not seem to use the rear seat in my truck as much as I thought I would.. I too have no family or Grand kids etc.
I just have to be sure I will be comfortable with my long legs in a regular cab truck.
Please make sure you post more when it arrives.

Love it! That's a configuration you don't see often anymore. Like you say, the way the market is, I wouldn't be surprised if a reg cab long or short bed will eventually be a thing of the past.

I'm an older dude and not into a ton of tech either, which is way I love my 2019 classic SLT.

I bet carvana or something like that would gobble up your 2019 for a good buck should you want to go that route. I'd do that before I traded it into a dealership.

Hi Hunter - I crunched a lot of numbers on Edmunds and other sites in the last 20 years and came up with that. I bought a couple new domestic vehicles in 2000 and 2001 (a trans am and a GMC 1500) and my salesman was a friend and showed me the invoices.

I’ve been configuring trucks on the Ram site hundreds of times and daydreaming about them for several years (we all do this, right?). I took the final price sans the delivery charge and multiplied by .9 (I’d have been happy with 10% off MSRP). Kippie, my salesperson, gave me the MSRP and Mark Dodge’s price and it all dovetailed.

I hope this info helps you!

I’m thrilled in these strange supply chain yada yada times to be able to buy a scarce commodity at such a price.

Funny how life does that to you, eh Loudram?

I figure on having this thing for ~20 years. I may have other vehicles in the motor pool, but it’ll be too useful to not have it. Especially as things go electric.

Love your handle, different drummer! It really applies in this world of 4 doors, V8s, and blackout packages! Not that there’s anything wrong with blackout packages

Go order one! They may not offer a regular cab after the 4th gen goes away.

It's funny, years ago a regular cab had almost no room behind the driver's seat. On the reg cab Ram's if you check them out carefully, there's good 12" of room between the seat and cab (less as it tapers up). That's very usable space. A lot of guys would be surprised how much can be stowed back there like tools, bags of groceries, laptop bag ...and other misc day-to-day items. The plastic tray along the back of the cab seems to be smartly sized to fit a gal of milk ..as I recall (at least on mine).

They used to offer a racking system that hung along the back of the cab with trays, etc that created even more usable storage. Once I noticed the extra space I stopped looking at larger cab trucks. 90% of the time I'm just hauling me and the extra room is all I need. Plus any items you put back there are well out of sight from evil-doers.

On another forum or two that I've been on for years, some members there have sold vehicles to them for impressive amounts and the process was easy and problem free from their home.

You’ve got that right! I’ve put a lot of stuff in the cab for long trips to big bend and elsewhere. Having a tonneau cover will help on that score.F4384FEC-0C78-4063-843F-3D2545C469F8.jpeg

My dealer rep told me today (email titled "Unit is pending final inspection!!") that my Ship Date was 2/12 (today is 2/12), and though she said that doesn't mean it is shipping today it does mean it is 4-6 weeks from shipping.

Can any of you read these tea leaves?

Ordered Jan 31st & shipping March 11th to 25th?

Sounds good to me.

FYI, you should always ask to see the invoice before making an offer. I never bought a new car without seeing the invoice. If the dealer refuses, turn & walk away.

crazytrain62,
I was going to say less than 12 weeks would be my estimate

The freight train only has to follow the tracks :)
Michigan assembly plant to Chicago then down to Dallas or San Antonio
Then it goes by car hauler from there

That is amazingly little time since I ordered on Jan 31.

Reading another of your posts, GT, sounds like its status is now ‘I’.
