Hey guys new here. Just curious how th shudder fix is holding up? My 14 Laramie has been shuddering for quite some time now. I actually have a used transmission that is supposed to be installed in a couple weeks. I might try some shudder fix before hand to see if that does the trick.

Thanks, Kevin

I added an initial 2 ounces of shudder fix in August, and another 2ounces in November.

The trans is still shifting very well with no shudder. I'd guess I've driven 5k to 10k miles since the first application.

For the guys who have used shudder fix did you put it in when you did a flui change or just add it to your existing fluid? I tried just adding it to my existing fluid. I figured since when adding fluid you just fill until it comes out of the fill hole I could just open up the fill Hole and add the shudder fix. Boy was I wrong what a frickin mess. I had the back of the truck higher so that pan was actually higher at the rear. The tranny was still hot from driving would the fluid expand that much?

Thanks

Transmission temp should be under 122F and the truck needs to be running

Wildone nailed it. The truck running forces fluid into the torque converter (front of trans), thus lowering the trans fluid level, allowing you to add fluid/additives to the rear fill port without fluid flowing out of the fill port.

Why the Germans didn't add a dipstick is beyond me.

Hi all, just an update since my first post in Feb 2021 on this post, the shudder did return and the rpm surge is as well.

I have changed the pan and fluid and did a second drain and fill and still have the shudder and rpm surge. I just bought some more Lubegard shudder fix and will add soon and report back.

I will say that I drove for about 18 months and probably 30k miles prior to this coming back, I will likely use the shudder fix until it no longer works or the trans goes and then spring for the remaned trans route. So like what was stated here before, it is a temp fix and does in fact work but will return.

Hi all,
Just got the chance to put in two tubes of the lubegard instant shutter fix and the shutter and RPM surge is now gone. I don't know how long it will last but if you have explored all other options, give it a try. I will keep using it as needed until the trans is replaced. I realized that it is likely a TC going bad and I am just buying time.
Good luck.

I've owned a ton of E36 BMWs and those old ZFs and Getrag gearboxes didn't have dipsticks either. Such a pain haha.

Did your gearbox have issues in cold weather only or all the time? Mine appears to do it only on cold starts when it's below freezing out. Lube guard and new oil hopefully will solve it.

It did start out with cold trans at first, then eventually it didn’t matter what temperature it would shuttered after every shift.

Got it, thank you. Sounds like something I should address sooner than later.

Hi all,

Just wanted to report back again, the shudder returned and this time much sooner. February 2023 till now, I knew I was just buying time till I could replace it.
The trans started downshifting harder and I could also hear the trans pump whining like it was cavitating. 159K currently on the original trans and I believe it all started around 130k.

I have finally thrown in the towel and got a used trans, and pick up the truck tomorrow.

So the shudder fix will help, its a Band-Aid not a fix, it does work, just buying time.

Happy to have a newer used trans 71K on it and should now be good till my truck falls apart.

Thanks for sharing your journey. Well you bought yourself some time anyway. Hope the new tranny works out. Shudder-fix is particularly effective when it's clutch pack related (wrong friction between the clutches). Then its basically modifying transmission fluid to have the right 'grab' qualities. Obviously your tranny must have something else going on. It would be interesting to know what the ultimate issue was.

Did you ever have the trans evaluated by a transmission shop? (sorry if I missed it if you did, this thread goes back a ways). Did you order a new T/C?

Best of luck in the swap....

Hey Jeepwalker, yeah I took it to a reputable trans shop, they said the T/C was slipping and the pump was going as it was cavitating.
I had did the pan dropped and fluid fill 3 times prior but the damage was done.
Just got the truck back this morning and it drives like new, no slip, no shudder, no engine RPM surge, just shifting like butter.

All said and done the R&R was $2,800.00 for a used trans (71k) including T/C, new pan and fluid, I could not be happier. The truck has 159k and it is in great shape, I have redone the whole front suspension and it will now likely, fingers crossed, last another 50k ish and I will buy a newer one then.
I just hate thinking about buying right now with the interest rates and the overall vehicle costs, I will keep this old girl till the wheels fall off.

Interestingly enough, they did not have to reprogram my trans, mine is a 2014 and I replaced it with a 2017, they said sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
