roof "caves in" when going through a car wash?

sorry if this is the wrong spot, not sure where to put something like this.

had my 14 ram for a year or 2, and have generally loved it. that said ever since ive had it ill take it through a car wash( i know i know) and get it washed. the problem arises at the end when it blows all the water off, once you really get into the strongest part of it, the roof gives me an audible thump and i can even see the headliner move slightly. it does it every time but i never hear or see it return back up when im clear. theres no leaks as far as i can tell, i havent inspect the top center of the windshield seal lately but theres really no issues other than it being really weird. i should note the dealership replaced my windshield when i first bought it.

does this happen to anyone elses 4th gen truck, or am i alone here?

Happens in my 16 no sunroof. The left and right sides of my hood also shakes pretty bad when driving at highway speeds. The metal Dodge uses on these trucks must be pretty thin.

My 2017 does it, depending in the car wash. No sunroof. Does not seem to hurt anything.

I have never run my truck through a car wash (too big) but every time I lean across the roof while washing it, it dents in very easily. The roof skin is paper thin.

My 2017 1500 Laramie does it also..no sunroof. But I have noticed it only happens in one particular car wash. I believe the fans at the end of the run are oriented straight down, thus more force of the wind "deforming" the roof panel. Another car wash I have used, has 3 or 4 fans surrounding the exit opening but they are mounted at an angle to the vehicles, not straight at it....that might be the difference.

Just a THOUGHT.... YMMV

My 2020 did it only through one specific car wash. I just started going to other car washes and it's never happened again. It will do it when I am waxing the roof as well.

It happens on my '10 Charger, but not my '13 Ram.

Did it every time in my 2016 1500. Doesn’t with my 2018 2500 diesel.

Don't notice it on my 2019 1500 Crew Cab.

GOOD INFO for all Ram Trucks. I put my truck, several months back, through a wash with the power wash for the bottom to wash off any salt. I did this a few times but couldn't get it to wash past my front seat. THEN one day I was able to have it power wash the underside past my rear seats. THEN the next time I tried to pump gas I couldn't pump more than 2 gallons before it would click off. As if it was full. I could then only pump about half a gallon then another click.

I took it to my Dealer and they then tried several "fixes" MOPAR told them to do. Nothing worked until they finally replaced my gas tank. My research told me the gas tank has a "Rollover Valve" that causes the problem. The only way to fix my problem is to do the replacement.!!

I mention this to warn all to NEVER allow a high pressure spray to hit the exposed gas tank behind the rear seat. If you look at that area the gas tank is exposed to everything from below. I believe the spray caused the valve to go out of whack causing it to no longer work properly. So remember to never use the high pressure spray under the truck.!!

I take my floorjack with me to the carwash and jack the truck up and wash the living hell out of everything underneath (usually a 1/2 dozen or more times per year),including the tank, and especially where the straps attach to the frame, been doing it for years, and never had an issue. i also don't park it,if i run into a heavy rainstorm,so i doubt the under carriage wash was the culprit. My 14 looks like this underneath,as i'm anall about washing it underneath, lol

My guess is your hose washing is no where near the pressure a car wash would give your vehicle. It's great you do what you do for the underneath. I made the comment about the Rollover Valve for anyones information.

Given that my 2019 was only a year old when the problem happened I can only believe the High Pressure was the problem. Given it happened the next time I filled up a few days later.....

Did you actually read the post.I take it to the local high pressure "carwash",the pressure is the same as your under carwash pressure is.By no stretch is the under belly wash in a drive through carwash going to spray the top of the tank as well as i do laying on my back under the truck while it's jacked up 2 feet in the air, specifically spraying the tank.it's top and the frame where the tank brackets are located. Do you park the truck if you run into a rainstorm. I would be more inclined to think,it was the vents time to die,as i doubt the wash had much to do with it.I think you're looking for a reason, and latched onto the idea it was the carwashs fault.Post your work order from the dealer, showing where they said it was due to the truck being washed.

I've not encountered this issue with any of my three Ram 1500s and none of them had a sunroof.
