What do people think about window tints? Just matching the front 2 windows to the rears or getting a ceramic coating on all the windows too? And what percentage do you recommend

I had all windows tinted, fronts, rear, back and windshield with ceramic tint to 15% all around and 70% on the windshield and I am very happy with it. The tint shop I went to may have just been feeding me BS but they told me that the rear windows are glazed instead of tinted and the glazing does not offer the same amount of UV or heat rejection as a window film will.

The rears are dyed glass, to about 20%. I had my front windows tinted to 20% to match. No tint on the windshield. Here's a pic...

The rear glass is not tinted from factory it is stained glass. they will add tint to it to match what you want the tint to be % wise. i did 22% side windows/rear and a 56% tint on the windshield. each state has different laws so read them before making your decision. law here say i am illegal but I guess we will find out lol.

Not too sure about the upper half of the US, but having tinted windows in Florida, Texas, Arizona Nevada etc, and California are a must. Definitely keeps the interior cooler, and adds protection for the leather and any other componTs. Also adds security and your not able to look and see what’s inside either.

……. Besides that, there‘s also the ’Bad Ass’ look factor :waytogo:

Slightly off topic, but I think a valid point…..
I have had tints done on all my three rams. I had the first set done at purchase and a couple years later I got some defects, damage from window runners etc. Plus there was always an annoying tiny bubble that didn’t go away.

2nd and 3rd set I had, the tint shop took out the windows. Took longer but what a perfect job. Look just like factory and no defects or air bubbles at all as they let it dry before replacing in vehicle. Don’t know if this is common but it is the way I always go now. Same company of course.
By taking out the glass they can run the film below the exposed glass so less chance of lifting/catching.

Legal Window Tint in NJ

  • Windshield: No tint allowed except those with medical conditions
  • Front side windows: no tint allowed except those with medical conditions
  • Backside windows: Any VLT %
  • Rear window: Any VLT %

Now that being said, plenty have gone past that. I seen a case in NE where a vehicle hit a pedestrian with illegal tint and it went from a plain accident to negligence

As it should. As annoying, or uncool, as some may feel these limits are, they do exist for safety reasons. Visibility is a rather important aspect of driving, lol.

Not disagreeing about the safety aspect. But there's more going on than just safety. Lots of states allow tint on the windshield and front side windows. But it's not legal in other states to tint either of those. Are you saying it's safe to tint the front side windows in Washington state, but unsafe to do so in New Jersey?

That's more of a rhetorical question. I realize that's not what you're saying.

Visibility certainly should be of a concerned any time, yet if you look into why certain states have tint limitations, it’s not solely nor even the main reason from the drivers View point.

It is more so from a Police Officer view point and their safety When approaching a vehicle.

This would make more sense to me than visibility/safety for the driver. But it seems strange then that my state changed the legal limit for the side windows from 35% to 20% a few years ago. Almost like they care less about the safety of LEO's than they used to.

Not in NJ, but I am in NY (downstate in Long Island). I have tinting on all my vehicles, but have a medical exemption. My wife legitimately has issues (allergies) to the Sun and on top of it, is allergic to most sun screens. NY law, with the exemption, I can tint any window I want (including the full front windshield) to as much tinting as I want. I do the sun strip on each front windshield.

Even with the tinting, on long trips, my wife will have rashes on the side closes to the window, but the tint makes a huge difference.

This is the tint on my commuter:

This is my 4th Gen, I only tinted driver, passenger and sun strip. I will be adding darker tint to the rear and back windows. I asked the tinter to match the OEM glass:

When I discuss the probable reasons for tint limits roadside, I agree with the driver that while 5% VLT is great in Texas at 3:00PM in August, they are reminded how unsafe it is at 1:00AM where pedestrians may be present; not to mention if it's raining.

As far as officer safety goes, if I can't see in the windows, I have the driver exit. Easy.

And of course, you always have the wonderful boys in blue who have limo tint but are more than a little enthusiastic to write tint tickets to anybody else...
Can't speak for Florida, but in Texas the tint law doesn't apply to law enforcement vehicles. On a related note, my agency (THP) doesn't allow tint below 25% VLT on our units.

I had the tint shop put either 50 or 70 on my windshield. It is ceramic so it helps keep out heat and glare but it is legally clear. I am probably going to do it on my truck at some point.

No. I am saying when you have tint so dark that you cannot see people at night, as an example, that's unsafe.

I have a buddy who has to roll his windows down to safely utilize his mirrors at night when in reverse. That's ridiculous, IMO.

Do you have a photo of the inside view of a 50% windshield tint?

22% of windows and 56% on windshield. I drive a lot when dark and it does not bug be one bit I can see just fine. I did ceramic tint and the heat it reflects is awesome. Having the windshield done not only prevents heat and light but cuts down on considerable amounts of glare from the sun or even headlights. Definitely makes night time driving better. If you use cheap quality tint the quality of visibility will change as well. So don't go to lowest bidder on tint.
