Anyone have any ideas on why my truck isn't taking a full tank of gas?

It's been topping out at 23 gallons the last 3 fill ups - and I know this isn't full because my fuel gauge isn't as high as it normally is and all 3 have been with the fuel light on. Also noticed my gas mileage has gotten way worse on these last 3 fill ups..not sure if it's connected or not.

Thanks for any suggestions.

My guess is something to do with check valve/filler neck, but haven’t pursued the issue. My ‘08 1500 used to take almost 26 gal when running on fumes. Then that slowly dropped over last year and now it will only take just over 20 gal under same conditions.

Interested if you find a solution

Interesting. I just bought my 08 1500 with the 32 gallon tank per the build sheet. Was sitting under 1/8th a tank and put 15 gallons in and ended up over 3/4. Who knows lol

Have they switched to winter blend fuel where you live yet? That always affects mileage. And not in a good way...

I’ve had my 2020 1500 for a year and a half now. On my way up to Maine I stopped for gas and the pump handle kept popping like it was full. I kept trying to put more gas in and you could hear the filler neck filling up with gas and shutting the pump off. I tried flipping the handle 180°, holding the pump handle halfway open, I tried pumping slowly and nothing helped. They kept clicking off every time the neck would fill up with fuel. I started researching on YouTube and found a few videos about the charcoal evaporator canister going bad. Then randomly on TikTok a video popped up with the same issue as I am having. Basically the tank had to be replaced. I took it to the dealer by my house and they are replacing my gas tank.

Interesting. I'll keep watching my tank to see if I have any more issues, but thanks for the heads up

Sorry guys for the delay. I never got notified I had replies. Lol

I continue to only get around 23 gallons, give or take. I'm starting to wonder if the float is bad and that's why it appears to be low. I haven't tested filling up from a gas can after the pump manually shuts off, that'll probably be my next step...once fuel goes down in price, that is.

Also, it is a 26 gallon tank. Generally my fill ups take about 24.5-25.5 gallons for reference - lately it is averaging around 22-23

Why are you running it down to empty? That is normally not a smart thing since you can pull water or other trash off the bottom of the tank. That was pounded in my head when I worked for a mechanic when I was a kid. LOL

I'm guessing there is a decent size reserve Ram gave you past empty to make sure people come out of their haze and actually fill up the tank. That will make it so you won't be able to fill up 26 gallons.

Good question. Most of the time it's just my forgetfulness and starting the truck in the morning realizing I'm way lower than I thought. I do try to avoid letting it get super low typically.

I believe I've narrowed it down to the float not reading accurately anymore. Obviously that's an expensive guess, but I'm going to fill up at the pump and then top off with a can to see if it takes more or if it immediately overflows a little. Hate doing that but don't want to spend the cash on a new pump just to be wrong.
